    1. Re: [GACOFFEE] Re:Kirkland House in SC
    2. Hi Nancy, I'm sending the message to the list since there are others that live in or near the Columbia area. I have hunted this paper all last night and most of today and in the process I did a lot of organizing but still have a way to go. I believe this paper to be a part of the Kirkland source records but since I have it loose, I can't be sure. The only other place I would have gotten it would have been from the Satilla Regional Library. I do know that it came from the files of Betty Kirkland Schledensky. Unfortunately, I wasn't careful to document everything when I first became interested in genealogy. Anyway...this letter was written in 1972 from a lady named Annie W. Brock and is to a lady named Wilma____?. Here's what it says: "There is a place in Camden that was purchased by a northern family and was what used to be known as the four mile house. In its time it was used as a mark for the stage coaches (four miles to Camden). Later it was called the "Kirkland House". My mother visited there and it did belong to some of the Kirklands but I do not know who. When I was there last it was in beautiful shape, lovely crystal chandeliers, circular staircase, large columns that you could not reach around and windows to the floor. The occupants used it in winter and as we were there in summer the caretaker took us all over the place. Out back were the stables. Unless fire has destroyed it it should be there still. Many times I have been to the Quaker cemetery. a number of our relatives are buried there. Richards' grave is nicely marked with a large blue granite stone with reference to his deed. Somewhere I have a picture of it. Sincerely, Annie W. Brock Hopefully with the Historical Society's help, you will be able to find this house and some of the history on it. The Richard, she mentions above is Richard Rowland Kirkland, the Angel of Mercy, correct? Let me know when you find the house. I still haven't tied our Kirklands into the family of Richard Rowland Kirkland but we will.
