    3. Notes on Ben Thomas; (Huxford "PoWG") THOMAS, BENJAMIN 1807-1878 BACON Benjamin Thomas was born 1807 in Cheraw District, S. C., a son of Benjamin Thomas, Sr. The latter with his family moved to Tattnall County, Ga., when the subject was two or three years old, and it was there that Benjamin, Jr., grew to manhood. He was married twice. His first wife was Mehala Music, born 1814 in Tattnall County, daughter of Mills Music who later moved to Appling county. They had the following issue: 1. Edward b. 1835. m. Nancy 2. Lydia Ann b. 1840, m. S. S. (Buck) Douglas. 3. John b. 1842, m. Mary Nelson, dau. of Washington. 4. Martha Jane b. 1844, m. Asbury C. Tanner. 5. Fannie b. 1846, m. (unknown). 6. Aaron F. b. 1845, m. Lydia Meeks, dau. of Hymrick. 7. Millie Ann b. 1847, m. William M. Tanner. 8. Jesse b. 1848. m. (unknown). The first wife having died during the war, Mr. Thomas married her niece, Sarah Music of Ware county. They had two children, Madison and Ella Thomas. Benjamin Thomas moved to Appling County about 1840 and settled in the 5th land district where he acquired in time a rather large tract of land, nearly 3000 acres in all. He owned lots 502, 503, 504, 509, 510, 511, all lying in a body. In the creation of Coffee County in 1854, partly out of Appling he was placed just inside the new county. By legislative act approved Dec. 20, 1859, his lands were annexed back to Appling. By another legislative act, approved March 5, 1875, the 1859 legislation was repealed insofar as applying to lots 502 and 511. In more recent years, when Bacon county was made in 1914 out of Appling, and Coffee it embraced all of these lands. The Thomas home and plantation was near the present town of Nicholls; he died there about 1878, his wife dying a few years later. Mr. Thomas served in the Indian War in 1838, serving one enlistment in Capt. David J. Miller's company of Ware County militia, and the other enlistment in Capt. James A Sweat's company of Ware County militia. The elder Benjamin Thomas was said to have been a brother to Banner Thomas (Vol.III) and to Lewis Thomas and James R. Thomas and Joseph Thomas, all of whom moved also to Appling County before 1840. Bill Fish
