Afternoon, Has anyone ever heard of Richard Rowland Kirkland of Camden, SC? I was at the capitol building earlier this week and there is a plaque honoring him. He was awarded the Confederate Medal of Honor during the Civil War and the medal is on display. I took a picture of the medal as well as a drawing of him but am not sure how they will develope because I wasn't using my 'good' camera. If they develope okay, will be happy to share with anyone interested. Would appreciate any information on this man. Thanks, Nancy E Parr
He was a soldier who fought during the Civil War and was honored for his heroics in one battle. Neither side had access to water, and both armies were screaming of thirst. Richard Rowland Kirkland went against his orders and began taking buckets of water onto the battlefield. When both sides realized what he was doing the shooting stopped and there was a large hurray from the soldiers. He was killed in a later battle. I have an article about the story at home, which I'll try to remember to bring tomorrow and post more of the story. Jeff >Afternoon, > Has anyone ever heard of Richard Rowland Kirkland of Camden, SC?
