I'd like to know who he was. My Hookses are from Washington County. I dabble in the others. Clyde
There were several Mary Douglasses. There were several Douglass families who migrated from NC to Burke County in the 1770s or 80s. John, Robert, Edward, Alexander, and Frederick are all names I've seen. I believe they were probably related by some way or another. I believe that all of them eventually wound up in Montgomery County, and some of them are later in Emanuel. Each of these men had either children or grandchildren by the name Mary Douglass. The above Alexander was married to Elizabeth Webb. They had a son named Frederick who married Bethany Anderson. They had a daughter Mary, b. 1815. Most sources have this Mary confused with the wife of John Tanner. It just isn't possible for her to have been born 10 years after she was married. The Frederick named in the first paragraph was married to an Elizabeth unknown. They are the parents of Alexander Douglas who married Dicy Watson (or Branch, or whatever your records show). This family is the one which settled in Appling County and many of their descendents are in Coffee and Bacon. I believe that our Mary who married John Tanner is the daughter of this Alexander and Elizabeth unknown. John, Robert, and Edward also had daughters named Mary. Is that clear now??? Ha Ha.
