    1. [GACOFFEE] Berry Hampton "Bunk" TANNER, Jr.

    3. I may have posted this before, but with new people on the list I thought I'd try it again. There is a legislative act passed on 21 January, 1852. It states that Berry Hampton Tanner has applied to change his son's name from Hampton Brickle to Hampton Tanner. This Berry Hampton Tanner was the son of John and Mary Douglass Tanner, and was the first sheriff of Coffee County. There are a couple of versions of the story, but BH's wife, Eliza Taylor, is said to have taken "Bunk" into her arms and raised him as her own. Does anyone know the identity of the biological mother of Berry Hampton "Bunk" Tanner? The above name, Brickle, would seem like it might be the right name. However, there was another sibling of this affair -- a daughter. I'm told that the daughter later married a Powell from Lumber City. The name Girtman has somehow also been associated with this relationship. Our Tanner family used to attend Powell reunions in Lumber City due to this relationship (some may still). If anyone can clear this up, I would be much appreciative. "Bunk" Tanner was my gg grandfather. Jeff
