He was probably hiding from his wife at the time, and hid so well the census takers couldn't find him either. That was the year BH Jr. was born, and Eliza probably wasn't very happy about that since she didn't have anything to do with it! I should have added that in 1840, my friend says his name looks more like "Farmer" than Tanner. But he lives near his brothers, Green and Elijah, so that shouldn't be hard to figure out.
