My ggrandfather at the age of 22 was listed in the 1900 census as a Servant, and he was living in a household which was not his own. This was before he married. And I figure this was his first job outside his families farm. But I have noticed others listed as Servants and many, many people listed as Boarders. I understand these folks were hired to work for these households, and also lived with them, but does anyone know just what the difference was between Servants and Boarders ? I have noticed these were mostly males. Most boarders are listed as farm laborers, and the same for some Servants too. What exactly was the difference back then ? Servant was paid to work there and part of which usually was room and board. A boarder is one that is paying to live there and worked elsewhere. ----- Original Message ----- From: southerngirl441 @hotmail.com <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 9:24 PM Subject: [GACOFFEE] Servants and Boarders > My ggrandfather at the age of 22 was listed in the 1900 census as a Servant, > and he was living in a household which was not his own.
