I found this while searching for the Brown Murder of 1893. A little something to read.....Winn SOME SOLOMONS WERE CRIMINALS: http://reworth.home.comcast.net/solomon.txt Two sons of James William Solomon supplied Coffee Countians with epi- sodes reminiscent of the James Brothers of western fame. After a trail of train robberies, shootings, arson and thefts, the Solomon Brothers were gun- ned down by law enforcement officers on July 3, l913. Randall, an escapee from prison, was wounded with five bullets and Andrew was killed. Family menbers believed that many of the things attributed to the brothers were done by other people. The following reports give more details: 1. Newspaper, July 8 - Slipping up on the home of Henry Merrier, half a mile from Kirkland, Andrew Solomon and Randall Solomon, wanted for car robberies, burglaries and assaults with attempt to murder, were late p5 today surprised by a posse of five county deputies. When he responded to a call of halt by bringing his shot gun up for action Andrew Solomon was shot and killed. Randall Solomon received from which it is feared he will die. Although in a dying condition, Randall told members of the posse that if he lived he would get some of them. Since Feb. Randall has been wanted for escaping from Berrien County gang where he was serving a 15-year sentence for arson. Andrew had been wanted for assault with intent to murder in Coffee County. Edgar Carver, the first member of the gang arrested, said the Solomons were hired to do the shooting that wounded three men in a Kirkland store a month ago. The Solomon brothers have been for some time fortified in a large swamp(Roundabout) in lower Coffee Co. In their clothing was found evidence of various burglaries. On one was a Smith & Wesson revolver which was identified as having been stolen from a store at McDonald. On the other were three diamond rings identified as having been stolen from a store in Pearson. In addition their were two bunches of keys consisting of 200 or more keys to fit every kind of lock immaginable. The brothers were wanted for robbing a freight train a few days ago. Both of the brothers had served previous chain gang sentences in Coffee County. 2. The Enterprise, Douglas, Ga. Leaving a trail of train robbery, shootings, arson and theft across their county, two Coffee County brothers, Andrew and Randall Solomon, were gunned down in early July, 1913.Reminiscent of characters of the "wild west" such as the James Brothers the Solomon brothers had residents of Coffee and Atkinson Counties literally shaking in their boots. Speaking frankly about his brothers, Walter Solomon believes many of the incidents attributed to them were untrue. "Once they got into trouble, he declared, people tried to blame them for everything that ever happened." It is probably true that the pair had many crimes attributed to them of which they were not guilty. <><><><><><><><><><><><><> Dedicated to the Preservation of Southern Heritage and Culture. -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
