Hi folks, I'm looking for any connection to the BYRD family of Coffee County that came out of Appling County. The names in CAPS is the direct line. 1st Generation: JOHN and GEMIMA BYRD John and Gemima had Lewis J. 2nd Generation: LEWIS J. BYRD 1813-1888 and SARAH PURVIS born ca 1820 Lewis and Sarah had: Demarias, James A. (G.), CLEMONS C., Henry J., Charles A., Daniel F., William B., John J., Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, Manning (Mann) D., Andrew J. 3rd Generation: CLEMONS C. BYRD (1843-1921) married JANE E. MARTIN (1847-died 1880-1885). (I have found proof of this marriage.) Jane and Clem had WILLIAM HAMPTON, Sidney E. and Sarah M. [Clem had another son, Lewis A. Byrd (b March 1894), with his last wife Martha (I do not have proof of the marriage, but they are on the census as husband and wife). Clem had a daughter, Mamie Lee b Sept 1893, with a woman named Cora MOORE (later BOOTH, later MORGAN). I have no proof that Clem and Cora were ever married as Cora and Martha were pregnant at the same time. Cora and Clem are not on any census together.] 4th Generation: WILLIAM HAMPTON BYRD (b 1876) married NETTIE F. (b ca 1891-1971). William Hampton was probably born in Appling County (he's in Appling's 1880 Census). In 1920 he's in Coffee Co. and in 1930 he's in Atkinson Co. He worked on the RR so he probably moved with the RR. William Hampton and Nettie had the following children: Mamie I., WILLIAM CHARLES, Clemants C., Paul C., Woodrow H., and Oscar J. 5th Generation: William and Nettie's son, WILLIAM CHARLES BYRD (1910-1964) is buried at Satilla Memorial Gardens in Coffee Co., GA. He was married to Lois McMillan and Elma Wilkerson. I do not have any more information on William Charles. I would like to find any members of this BYRD line that may know something about the child, Mamie Lee, that Clem Byrd had with Cora Moore. There was little connection between the Byrd family and Mamie Lee as near as I can tell; however, I did find a deed that shows Mamie's step-father loaning money to Clem's brother Manning (Mann) D. Byrd and Mary F. Purvis (Mary was Clem and Mann's first cousin). I feel confident that I have the right Clem Byrd. (Btw, Clem Byrd is listed as Mamie's father on her death certificate. In addition, for Mamie's first census in 1900 she's listed with the surname "Byrd"; in 1910 she has her late step-father's surname of BOOTH. After that she goes by her married name of TODD.) Thank you all. I do have more information on this line. I'd be happy to send it to anyone who is interested. -- Tara D.
