MATTIE TAYLOR, 87, LAID TO REST ON SUNDAY Last rites were held Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at Chatterton church for Mrs. Mattie Taylor, who passed away Friday at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Taylor who lives on Schley St.. The deceased, a native Coffee Countian, had been ill for several months. She is survived by two sons, G. W. Taylor of Douglas and Jake Taylor of Waycross; three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Bagley and Mrs. Bessie Cothern of Waycross, and Mrs. Martha Anderson of Jacksonville; one brother, Jake Hersey of High Springs, Fla.; 38 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers and the Rev. John Carter of Alma and Rev. Hanell Sears jointly officiated. Interment was in the Chatterton cemetery with Sims Funeral Home in charge. Hello Lourice, Your transcription (thanks for your efforts) of the obituary below reports a death date for Martha (Hersey) Taylor (wife of John B. Taylor) to be in May 1954. My information from the cemetery would indicate Martha ("Mattie") died in October 1954. Is the newspaper obit actually dated May 27, 1954. I'd appreciate it, if you would double check the newspaper dates.
