Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ic.2ADE/72.384 Message Board Post: I have a little bit of info on this massacre. It occured around 1837 near what is now known as Pridgen, GA. The whole family (sorry no names were mentioned other than the surname) were robbed and killed by the Indians. When word of the murder spread a company of citizens including, Redding Metts, John Passmore, Fred Merritt, Mr. Maddox and others pursued the Indians, who were overtaken at the Flint River, near Albany, GA. Many of the Indians were killed, some swam the river and escaped. John G. Taylor, who since that time became a well known Baptist minister in South Georgia, dived down to the bottom of the river and brought many of the Indians to land. This information came from Ward's History of Coffee County published in 1930. ISBN 0-87152290X. My father was a Grantham.

We are trying to trace our Cherokee bloodline and I believe it came from my grandmother Estella Tanner (Born abt 1901 Died in 1940) Her father was Aaron M. Tanner (born abt. 1872) and mother was Leathie (or Lathie) Spivey (born abt. 1885). Their other children were Neulea (born abt. 1899) Bill (born abt. 1903) and another younger son named Berry. They were all born in Coffee County. My mother was only 10 when her mother passed away and this is the only info I have. If you have anything that might help me tie my family together it would be greatly appreciated!

    3. Yes, actually Aunt Mary and Uncle John are my great-aunt & uncle. They are buried out at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Ambrose along with a memorial to their only son Clarence who was killed in WWI. I think Clarence and his wife had a child that died in infancy too and is buried with them. They lived on the family farm in Ambrose. It's still in the family. I can give you details on Uncle John's family. Again he and Aunt Mary only had one son and he was killed in WWI. My Uncle Edison Young is still living ; he was very close to "Pap" and has a lot of memories. Uncle John's DOB: 04/29/1880, DOD: 01/02/1979. Aunt Mary Stewart Sturgis: DOB: 05/02/1899, DOD - 02/09/1950. They were married on 12/26/1915. I knew Uncle John, he died after I graduated from high school. We used to take my grandmother, his sister, back to the farm a lot for visits when I was growing up. They had other siblings but I only knew he and Uncle "Son", their youngest brother. Henry and Margaret "Sis", had died by the time I came along. Their father, Daniel Sturgis, fathered several children and Uncle Jon had a different mother than Henry and Sis, and Granny even another one. I have a lot of info on them if you'd like more. I don't have anything extra on Aunt Mary's family though. My Uncle Edison Young would know some though. He is 86 and living in Jacksonville, FL. He was very close to them both, especially after Clarence died. I look forward to hearing from you - Judy Y. 3. In my notes, I have his parents as Jonathan E. Chaney, DOB: March 1862, DOD: January 25, 1927. Mother - Annie Huelett. They were married in 1883. I have Barney's name spelled Barnie - I don't have notes on who shared that with me originally. I have Jonathan's parents as Alexander Chaney, DOB 9/1829, DOD 1/11/1909; Martha Ann Rhodes. Alexander is burined at Rocky Pond Church Cemetery in Coffee County but I have Martha Ann buried at Hebron Baptist Church. I may have more generations in my database. Let me know if you'd like to have all the Chaney stuff I have.
