I was reading that 18 men were convicted of lynching Dave Wright. Does anyone know who these men were? ~~~~ FOUR MORE PLEAS IN LYNCHING CASES Four other defendants indicted in Coffee County for lynching Dave Wright August 30, last year, entered pleas of guilty to mob violence before Judge H. B[?]. Reed Wednesday afternoon and were sentenced. John Strickland, 40, with a wife and six children, the eldest twelve years old, drew a sentence from four to 20 years in the penitentiary. Strickland was reared in Oconce County, came to Coffee County two years ago from Baldwin County. Tilden Smith, 22, who was tried eight weeks ago on circumstantial evidence where the jury made a mistrial received a sentence of from one to five years in the penitentiary. Robert Bullard, 22, who was married just before the mob went after him and virtually drafted him into the mob, and who later when arrested and brought back from Florida and turned state's evidence, which brought about the arrest and conviction of all the other members of the mob, was given a sentence of one to five years at the State prison. D. B. Lott, 18, who had been supporting a widowed mother, and who was forced into the mob over his protest and the protest of his older brother, George Lott, and who did no shooting and nothing except drive one of the cars which transported the mob was sentenced to serve from one to five years at the State farm. The sentencing of these men closed up the lynching trials except for Make Tanner, who fled the county and has never been arrested. Sixteen members of the seventeen men who composed the mob have either been convicted or entered pleas of guilty. Two were sentenced for life, eleven were given sentences of four to 20 years, while three were sentenced from one to five years. Any WOOD relations out there??? ~~~~~~ Hey Brenda My maiden name is Wood. I can trace my Wood line back to John Wood b 1857 in Montgomery County, GA. He was the s/o Martha Wood b 1829. Martha has 3 children in the HH with her in 1860--Margie Ann b 1855, John b 1857 and an unnamed female. There is a Martha Wood b 1829 in the HH of Peter Wood in 1850 in Emanuel County, GA. I can't prove this is the same Martha, but I am highly suspecting of such. John & Margie Ann Wood both end up in Coffee County by 1870. Margie Ann married Lewis Luke Anderson, and John married Elizabeth Fales. Please respond. Sherry Harrell in Callahan, FL ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Hello, I am also researching the Smith family. My great grandfather was Warren Smith and brother to Julia Ann, Ardelia and Margaret. Their father and mother was William J. Smith and Elizabeth Dent Smith. William J. Smith last appears on the 1850 Census of Ware County. Elizabeth is listed in the 1860 Census of Coffee County and at that time, Julia Ann is 15 years old, Ardelia is 11 years old, Warren is 5 years old, and Margaret is 3 years old. Elizabeth last appears on the 1880 Census of Coffee County and is 63 years old. Margaret Melinda is 22 years old then and lives with her. My question is what happened to William J. and when did he die. I was told by family history that he died in an Indian War. It could have been the 3rd Seminole Indian War but I have no proof. Also where is Elizabeth buried? Thanks for any help. Ann Smith Roberts ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

I've recently learned their married names and have started tracing their lines in addition to my own. I am descended from their sister, Margaret Malinda Smith Bagley. 1. Julia Ann Smith (b.1846 d. 1910-1920) married Mitchell Wright in Coffee Co., GA before 1868 2. Ardelia Smith (1848-1930) married Jesse Wright circa 1865 in Coffee Co., GA. I believe that Mitchell and Jesse Wright may both be sons of William Wright but have yet to confirm this. I would like to find where these women and their families are buried.
