Do you know if he played with the Green Bay Packers? I have a telegram from 1946 sent to his name in Elberton, GA, which I found in my grandmother's belongings. I'm finding two ? Van Davises with about the same dates of birth and within a few miles of each other in the early years. Don't know if they are the same man. I do see a Van Davis on the faculty of South Georgia College in Douglas, but again, don't know it it's the right one. I'd love to reach his family to see if they'd like the telegram. The Packers museum and the Georgia Sports Hall of fame both want it but I'd prefer to give it to a family member if they'd like it. Hi Folks, Descendants of the Wiregrass Georgia Pioneers may be interested in the new Lost Colony Project. The Lost Colony Center for Science and Research is attempting to resolve the long-standing mystery of whether or not the colonists survived and were assimilated into the indigenous population, or whether they perished. Added to the basic mystery are little sidebar mysteries that revolve around the area shipwrecks, sailors involved in a mutiny, the forts, expeditions, and more. This truly has all the makings of a great mystery, including the early murder of one of the colonists. This project is one of mammoth proportions. Roberta J. Estes, Director of DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center has compiled a list of "surnames of interest" from multiple sources. So far, the list of surnames includes the Lost Colony Roster plus a list of names that the Lost Colony Center refers to as the "Wanted Dead or Alive" list. This list was compiled from doing good old genealogy work using deeds and other early documents. Specifically, these are the names of families and neighbors of those who eventually obtained land grants to the land that was originally home to the indigenous villages. If the colonists survived, they were believed to be integrated into one or more of these villages. Roberta Estes will be adding more names to the list from other groups that have oral history or other historical reason to think they might be descended from the Lost Colonists. The initial list of surnames is posted below. If you think, your Wiregrass Georgia ancestors may have included descendants from the indigenous villages in Eastern North Carolina from the 17th and 18th centuries, you may be interested in looking into the Lost Colony Project. If one or more of the surnames posted below are of interest to you, Roberta Estes would like to hear from you. The Lost Colony Project is looking for the primary researchers for each family name involved. Roberta is looking for a lead person for each surname who will do things like post family messages for a particular family and help find descendants, documentation and resources. Also, if you know of family archival web sites for any of these family names, please let Roberta know. Plans for a Lost Colony Symposium to be held in North Carolina Sept 7-9 have been finalized. If you are interested in the Lost Colony DNA project, or the Lost Colony, or the history of Eastern North Carolina, the Symposium will hold information you'll appreciate. There are also optional Field Trips after the Symposium. The flyer for the Lost Colony Symposium which includes the agenda and registration information is at: <http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymposium.html>http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymposium.html. By the way, the credit card link for registration is still under construction, but you can still register for the Symposium by sending a check. Though I don't have a lot of information on the Ellen Roberts Hargraves Summerlin line (my family line is through Hardy Summerlin, b. abt. 1770 m. Penelope Collins; and his son David), I'm pretty sure the banker you're referring to is the banker that my folks always used and that I continue to use to this day (I'll include his contact info in a seperate e-mail for privacy purposes); he's descended through old Hardy's son Allen and his (Robert A's) grandmother was Olive Hargraves (I don't know, but I would guess it's probably the same Hargraves family somehow). He's the one who mentioned this old soldier buried in a local field. According to "Mr Rob" (as I call him), his Dad (or maybe Granddad) always told him that this fellow was one of his "Uncles" (hence my guess it might be one of old Hardy's sons, but I really don't know). And as an interesting side-note, you mentioned some Summerlins having married some Newberns. I've just recently come across this, which is interesting - my father (Julian Donald Summerlin, son of Willie Dennard, grandson of Solomon Asberry, g-grandson of William Thomas, g-great grandson of David, g-g-great grandson of old Hardy) married a Newbern, which is also tied into these same Newberns. It's amazing how the family lines can cross and then cross again (and again)! If I can be of any further help just let me know. Hope this helps, and good luck with your search!... Stephanie, Many years ago I visited the Carver Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Willie Vickers; Aug. 7, 1843; June 11, 1916; has a double tombstone with Francis (sic) Lott Vickers; Feb. 16, 1848; June 3, 1923. Buried next to them is William Vickers; Jan 17, 1882; Jan. 3, 1938; has a double tombstone with Delanie Brooker Vickers; Jan. 25, 1881; Mar. 30, 1956. I also checked Rev. Richard Vickers, Apr. 1, 1867; May 9, 1932; has a double tombstone with Beady A. Vickers; June 12, 1872; Apr. 27, 1934. I have not established a relationship with any of those folks. Hi, I am researching William Marshall Vickers, born Aug 7, 1843 in Irwin Co, GA and died either on June 1, 1903 or June 11, 1916 in Coffee Co, GA. I am thinking 1916 since I did find him I believe in the 1910 census with wife, Frances...married 44 yrs with 9 children. He married Frances Pearl Lott in 1866 in Coffee Co, GA. I know from some research that they had the following children: Richard - 1867-1932 Matilda - 1869-1943 Eli D. - 1872-1932 Daniel - 1874-1939 William Henry - 1876-1947 Rebecca - 1878-1955 William I. - 1881-1938 John - 1884-1962 Mitchell - 1886-1951 Appreciate any help in my research....especially with the actual date of death for William Vickers.....thank you...
