tO mARTHA I have ordered a copy of a book about Wiregrass Warriors printed in Moultrie- dont know how much help it will be but I will look for names in it -- if you will tell me which name you are looking for. Was this one of "our" Solomon ancestors?? I'm still looking for more info on Peter Solomon father of James(1770-1855). Have you found any thing more? Ludell Solomon
Civil War buffs...I have several questions about Barrows [Bars] Bluff and the war: 1. What was the specific Union Army company that was sent down the Ocmulgee River to capture the river crossings and riverboat landings? Specifically, the Barrows Bluff site in Coffee Co.? 2. What route would this company have taken to rejoin Sherman's Army in Savannah? Or did they rejoin at another point? 3. What happened to Sherman's army after Savannah? How would they have traveled back North? What route? Our problem: Gerald's great-great grandmother left at Barrows Bluff with a member of the Union company to return to an unknown point in the North. His g-great grandfather had died in 1862 during the early part of the war. His great-great grandmother, fell in love with the Union Army member and returned North without her children. We have no idea of her maiden name since she was from Darien, GA. As you know, this site was almost destroyed by Sherman's troops, thus few records exist for Darien. We do believe that since she was a widow she would have used her husband's surname as she traveled and married this Union man. This is a big brick wall in our research. Any suggestions for tracing her will be appreciated. Thanks, Dr. Martha Wooten Solomon
Karen and I have each recently acquired a book that we both think is interesting reading. Karen was told a story by a fellow Coffee County school teacher about the clock at the Atkinson County courthouse in Pearson. It seems that Atkinson County had one legal hanging and the man that was hung cursed the town of Pearson, and the clock stopped when he was hung, never to run again. we've done some asking around recently and everyone we talked with in Pearson told us to talk with a man named Carlie Lastinger. Mr. Lastinger's grandfather was killed by the man that was sentenced to be hung and he has written a book about the events. The book is called, "The truth about Old Geech", and if you can overlook the rather gruesome front cover, it makes for good reading. It is also an "easy-to-read" book of 106 pages and contains short chapters on life back in the early 1920s, some of the Lastingers, as well as interviews with different people that attended the public hanging, that knew his grandfather, and knew Claude King, the young black man known as Geech. It contains interviews with former Atkinson County residents such as: Miss Eva Dell White, one of Mr. Lastinger's former teachers, Mrs. Martha Ella Pafford Corbitt, S. B. Lastinger, Mr. Ken Jasper (Coaden) Giddens, Mrs. Ada McKinnon Witherspoon, Mrs. Rachel (Lovey) Cooper Wilson, Mr. James Mullis, Mrs. Nessie Belle Tucker Lastinger (who made the black hood to slip over the condemned man's head),and Mrs. Olive Deen Sumner. Mr. Lastinger sets out on a journey in search of the truth and to find an answer to that age-old question......WHY????? And during his search, he able to lay to rest some of the many superstitions and rumors that surround the hanging, some of which continue to be passed around even today. If you are interested in the book or the trial, please contact Mr. Lastinger at: anfhl@InfoAve.Net The book is sold for $11.95 and he has some copies left. Take care, Melody

Hi Gloria, I'm pretty sure that the Satilla Library doesn't have copies of the Ocilla Star. I do that the Irwin County Library has it on microfilm because I made a copy from it once. Be sure and post the people that you are looking for. Since there are a number of searchers here researching the Paulk name, we may be able to help. Take care, Melody > Hi-- > I am new to this list. As far as I know the Satilla Regional Library doesn't have the Ocilla Star on microfilm. Only the Douglas Enterprise and Coffee County Progress and a few issues of the Douglas Breeze. Don't know if it will help you, but there was a web site for Jeff Davis Co. awhile back that had a lot of geneaological info in it -- haven't visited it lately -- but you may try that if you have not done so. Also, I believe the Jeff Davis Public Library in Hazlehurst has a cemetery book for Hazlehurst. Their # is 375-2386. I don't know if this will help, but I have seen in the past a web site for Jeff Davis County (Hazlehurst) which has a lot of genealogical info in it. If you have not checked this out, you might have a look at it. Carol Roberts, Hazlehurst, GA "Tom B. Hi-- I am new to this list. The names I am researching are THOMPSON, ELARBEE, BRANCH, PAULK, and others. Today, I would like to find out if anyone knows whether or not the Satilla Library would have old issues of the Ocilla Star Newspaper. Thanks for your help Gloria Bueschel Wellington, FL glbueschel@aol.com
Thanks for your help -- When the South seceded from the Union, the Southerners renounced their United States citizenship; and when the South surrendered, the Confederacy ceased to exist, leaving the former " Rebels" without citizenship. In order to regain their U.S. citizenship, the Southerners were required to sign a loyalty oath to the United States. According to President Andrew Johnson's Amnesty Proclamation, Union Sympathizers, Blacks and the common class of Southerners could sign the loyalty oath, regain citizenship and resume their lives. The Reconstruction Act of March 13, 1867 required the commanding officer in each military district to have, before September 1, a registration of all qualified voters in each county. These lists would be used to determine all who would be eligible to vote for any proposed Constitutional Convention in the state. A search of the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Atlanta, Georgia revealed that a "Summer Gibbins" (Givens) was listed in the "The Reconstruction Returns of Voters Under the Reconstruction Act - 1867." This record can be found in Drawer 297/Microfilm Box #15/Negative/GRG 4-354/Georgia. Executive Department, Returns of Qualified Voters Under the Reconstruction Act - 1867/Volume 47, District 15, Irwin County. This record lists voter's number (#82), date of registration (August 20, 1867), name (Summer Gibbins), book (A) and page (Page 440) in Oath Book, race (Colored), time of residence in state (12 months), county and precinct within a year (432nd Precinct, Senatorial District No. 15, Irwin County, Georgia). Also located in the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Atlanta, Georgia were the "Reconstruction Registration Oath Books (1867)". This record can be found in Drawer 296, Microfilm Box #35 / Negative / GRG 3-3069 / Georgia. Executive Department, Reconstruction Registration Oath Books - 1867/Volume 88, District 15, Irwin County. This record lists name (Summer Gibbins), date of registration (August 20, 1867), and county of residence (432nd Precinct, Senatorial District No. 15, Irwin County, Georgia). I also made a copy of the entire voters registration list for Irwin County. If you would like me to check for a relative, let me know. Gene Givens Abingdon, MD

Rootsweb seems to be incredibly slow tonight. I sent a reply to Clyde Hook's message around 4:30 or so and it hasn't shown up yet. Must be out in la-la land somewhere. I was able to send a reply personally to Herman Johnson and it went through so the trouble must be with rootsweb only. Let's see if this message gets through. Melody
