For all you Kirkland researchers: KIRKLAND FAMILY REUNION The descendants of Richard and Hester Kirkland will gather once again for fun, fellowship and great food, to celebrate the history of this great family. **On Friday, October 27th, all family members are encouraged to attend an informal genealogy get-together. It will be held at the Waldroup Avenue Church of God Social Hall, in Douglas, from 5:00-9:00. Please feel free to bring any research that you would like to share. As stated, this will be an informal get-together with no planned speakers or particular discussion. Just good fellowship and swapping research, ideas, and questions. We'll even discuss the allied families such as the Lankfords, Tanners, Meeks, Pickrens, Thigpens, Millers and whomever or whatever ya'll want to discuss. We'll have homemade pound cake and coffee and soft drinks there, but anyone wishing to contribute cups, napkins, or plates or even some "finger-food" just let me know. **The Kirkland reunion will be held Saturday October 28th, from 11:00 until 5:00 at the C. E. Weir Center on East Bryan Street in Douglas. Following the traditions set by our grandparents and great-grandparents, there will be plenty of wonderful and delicious food including the traditional Kirkland Bar-B-Que. Please bring a basket lunch of your favorite foods along with either a gallon of tea or soft drinks. Plates, cups, napkins, and utensils will be furnished. **A genealogy table will be set up again this year at the reunion. Those that have any old family photos or memorabilia to share are invited to bring their treasures to show and share with others. Please be sure and bring our family group sheets either to the get-together or the reunion. There has been some interest and talk of doing an updated version of The Kirkland Book. We would like to include as many families as possible. There will also be blank group sheets available both days if you need any extras. **We also need some volunteers to watch over the genealogy table. Say in 30 minute or one hour blocks of time. We just don't want anyone finding our picture's and treasures irresistible. Everything went well last year, but I would sure hate to tell someone the picture of their dear old grandma walked away from the table while we weren't looking. Just e-mail me personally if you'd like to help. You don't have to know all about the Kirkland line or be "into" genealogy to volunteer. **The organizing committee for this year is: Jimmy Kirkland, Marshall Kirkland, Vaye Holton, Jean Varnadoe, Melody McCook, Nell Moore, Milton Kirkland, Richard Fred Kirkland, Reggie Kirkland, and James Carver. Most everyone has e-mail, but I'm not sure about Richard Fred, Jean, or Reggie. In fact, if you all would forward it to your own family members, I would appreciate it. I don't have everyone's e-mail yet. Also, we would like to come up with some fund-raising ideas for next year and the future years. we've talked about an update on the Kirkland book, t-shirts, family cookbook, and an auction. If you guys have any ideas, we'd love to hear them. Next, we've also thought we should mention those family members that have passed away in the year since the last reunion. I have a short list and I would certainly hate to leave anyone out. Please send me your names for this "roll-call". There has been mention of a family association and we would certainly have to discuss this. I do know that for large families they can be very successful. We also have a family cemetery to maintain. Not to mention numerous other gravesites around the Atkinson and Coffee area. I would like to see each grave identified and eventually marked, but I realize that may be an impossible task. Military grave markers or headstones are provided free from the government and I know there are some graves that need these. **We also need to try and get some kind of ball-park figure as to how many people will be attending the genealogy get-together and or the reunion. I realize that any figure we get will probably be way off, but we do need to do a little planning where the bar-b-que and plates and utensils and so forth are concerned. Please feel free to discuss anything in this message. We're all family here so don't be shy, We certainly can use all the help that we can get. And we do appreciate it so much!! That's about it for know. I hope to hear from some of you real soon! Take care, Melody mmccook@bellsouth.net
Shirley, I saw a query that you posted concerning Manning Spivey and wife Lille. For those who are interested see the query below. I'm a descendant of the Kirklands, but I have a Manning Spivey listed in my database. From the Kirkland Book, I have Manning married to Mary Kirkland, daughter of Joshua, Jr. and Hester Clesta Lott. I've never heard the story of Joshua's wife or of the other woman and the children. Interesting. I'll have to look into it. Since Hester was a Lott, maybe some of the Lott researchers may know this story? Also who is the Edmund Sr., that you refer to a Spivey or a Kirkland? Thanks and take care, Melody My family started out in Coffee County with Edmund Sr.,Joshua Sr.was my gg-grandad.Joshua Jr.,my g-grandad.Joshua Jr's daughter,Lillie was my grandmother. She married Manning Spivey.Lillie was not born to Joshua Jr's wife.Story is his wife was put in a home because her mind went bad,so this other lady had 3 children for him. They were never married. The other 3 children were Lillie,Penny, and Ben.Have you ever heard this.I have looked for the name of my grandmother's mother for years.(Lillie)Any photos from any of these families, starting with Edmund Sr.will be appreciated.
Dear Clyde. I do appreciate your reply and apology. It is not that I do not want to give you any information, I don't believe I have anything that you don't already have. I honestly thought you had more information than I do. I am sorry for the confusion. Elizabeth, Don't know how Burrell got under his brothers children but I have gone back and corrected this. This looks like an e-mail I sent out to someone on the Coffee List. Burell is the son of William and Mary Prescott Taylor and William is the s/o Henry, RS. I am glad that you caught that so I could correct it. Taylor because as far as I know, they are not ancestors of Riner (Meeks) descendants. I didn't notice Burrell, because like I said, I skipped over that section. Of course Burrell was not the son of James J. Taylor. To the best of my knowledge, he was the son of William Taylor, born circa 1775, and Mary Prescott. My information on the dates for their son, James Warren Taylor, differ from those shown, but I may be wrong. I have more questions than I have answers when it comes to the Taylor Families. Clyde
Dear Clyde, I do not understand why you have to be so upset and make a big deal that I have not written. You are taking it very personal, and it has nothing at all to do with you. You have no idea what my life has been like, and it is now just starting to calm down. I just really wish you would not make me sound rude or whatever, when you have no idea why I haven't written. It is nothing that you should take personal. My apologizes to the list, but I would like to plea my side. Normally I wouldn't, but this is not the first time something has been said. Thank you so much. Below are my paragraphs on Frances and Merritt. Hope it helps. I usually forget to say it, but I do appreciate additions and corrections. Clyde Page 1235: Children of Alexander Douglas: Frances Douglas was born Feb. 18, 1832, in Appling County, Georgia (see pg. 17, 1235). She was listed with her parents in Appling County during the 1850 census. She married first John Meeks, son of Hymrick Meeks. See Meeks Family in this section, pg. 1359. After John died, Frances married Merritt Meeks (pg. 16, para. #bc). Pages 16 & 17: Grandchildren of Amos and Elizabeth Riner continued: Children of Charles C. and Lydia (Riner) Meeks continued: #bc. Merritt Meeks was born Apr. 29, 1827, in Emanuel County, Georgia (see pg. 7). Although his tombstone says he was born in 1826, census reports indicate he was born in 1827. A male in his age group was listed with his parents in Emanuel County during the 1830 census and with them in Appling County, Ga., during the 1840 census. He married first Mary Ann Morrison in 1847 in Appling County, Georgia. Their family is in Cole-Meeks, I, 199 & II, 74; Douglas Enterprise, Aug. 30, 1973; and Wiregrass, III, 205-06. [Mary Ann was born Mar. 12, 1826, in Montgomery County and was the daughter of Hugh and Mary (-?-) Morrison.] Their children: Malcolm H. (see pg. 51), John James (see pg. 51), Mary Jane (see pg. 52), Merritt "Bud" Jr. (see pg. 52), Hymrick M. "H. M." "Little Hymrick" (see pg. 52), Daniel (see pg. 53), Charles Francis "Frank" (see pg. 53) and Mary Ann (see pg. 53). They were farming, next door to his brother, Hymerick, in Appling County during the 1850 census. They were farming, next door to his nephew, Redding Green Meeks (pg. 43, para. #baa), in Coffee County, Ga., during the 1860 census. Merritt was a private in Company I, 4th Ga. Cavalry Regiment, during the War Between the States. They were farming, next door to his brother, Hymerick, and two houses from his nephew, Merritt Meeks (pg. 47, para. #bbb), in Coffee County during the 1870 census. He was a justice of the peace for Coffee County. They were charter members of Union Baptist Church in Coffee County. Mary Ann died Feb. 2, 1879. Merritt married second Frances (Douglas) Meeks Oct. 27, 1879, in Ware County, Georgia. [Frances was born Feb. 18, 1832, in Appling County; was the daughter of Alexander and Dicy (Watson) Douglas; and was the widow of John Meeks. See Douglas in the Related Families Section, pg. 1235.] They were farming, next door to his son, John, and four houses away from his nephew, Stafford Meeks (pg. 47, para. #bbd), in Coffee County during the 1880 census. Merritt died July 16, 1884, at Nicholls, Georgia. He and Mary Ann are buried in Old Meeks Cemetery, northeast of Nicholls. Frances was listed with her son-in-law, Elisha Moore, in Ware County, Ga., during the 1910 census. She died Feb. 4, 1913, and is thought to be buried in an unmarked grave in Meeks Cemetery, at Nicholls.

In my Related Families Section I have paragraphs on ancestors of Riner descendants. I usually say who the girls marry, but other than that, I don't keep data on siblings of ancestors of Riner descendants. Below is what I have. Clyde Page 1438: The Tanner Family; Third Generation: Grandchildren of John E. Tanner; Children of Russell Wilson Tanner continued: James Russell Tanner was born July 18, 1847 (see pg. 1435).
