    3. Hi again Joyce, Anytime I wrote 'they had' or 'I have' or 'I show', this is only to show what I have in my data; not to imply that this is ALL the information out there on any of these ancestors :-) Just wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page on this. Example: my showing that there was only one child born to Archibald Miller and Hester W Kirkland Miller. Thanks for that added info; I'll add it to my data and will try to see if we can find any other documentation. I don't have FTM open just now so am not sure if I had a second wife for Moses Kirkland; will check on this after dinner. If I don't find this wife, can I ask for more info on her if you have it? There are alot of Pridgen's in my lines so this opens another door :-) Thanks for the information. Like Melody, I thank everyone for being so generous in sharing information with others on this list :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr -----Original Message----- From: Joyce Ruis <jruis@nbank.net> To: GACOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com <GACOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, March 03, 2001 6:13 PM Subject: Re: [GACOFFEE] One of my Lines > >Hi Nancy,, > > Thanks for the come bacck. 3. Melody, Nancy & Listers All, I don't know of any connection of Tanner & Kirkland until my brother married one in 1976. And that was local here in Manatee Co FL where my family has been from 1922. I have no defined proof, but I feel that the Tanner familiy in Sumter Co FL has some connection to my Jefferson Co FL line as well, but that again is another story. I do appreciate all the help, clues and suggestions. As some nice researcher jusyt commected, if we all work together we can complete oh so much more. Just wanted to take a minute before I get back to work and let you know that one of the other list members, Rachel Caves, saw my post last night and helped me with a line that had been dead-ended for a number of years!! Thanks to her generosity, I can now find more of my Tucker family and I really appreciate it!! This is just one example of how this can can work if we all pull together, so don't be shy, jump in there and ask some questions about your family lines. My info was sitting in Rachel's database and you never know who might have the info that you're looking for!! melody

    2. Nancy, I have a very bad copy of an old map that is at the tax assessors office in Coffee County. I think it was printed around 1890. It lists all the names of the landowners on it. The writing is faded and some are hard to read, but I'll take a look at it tonight. It's from the wrong time period for these families, but I'll see who is listed on it. On another side note, you're discussing the Tanners and Kirklands with Steve, ask him about HIS connection!!<G> they're intertwined yet again!! 1. Re: Re: [GACOFFEE] Family lines
    2. Hi Nancy, I'm at work now and don't have my info with me, so I don't have the dates, but LJ's name was actually Ellijay Kirkland. He was the son of Kiler and Alice Kirkland Kirkland (no typo, they were cousins). He may be listed in your files that way. His nieces and nephews called him "Uncle Jay". His first wife was Mary Laura McGovern, daughter of Thomas and Adeline Ricketson McGovern. His 2nd wife was Belle Hersey, and her parents' names escape me at the moment! On a side note Thomas's father Matthew McGovern was a poor irishman who came to this country and got a job helping build railroad bridges. He came over here with Patrick (?) Neugent. No slacker, he bought a farm in another county and was married there to his first wife. No children. He married 2nd Eliza Peterson, daughter of John Peterson. It has been said that Thomas McGovern gave each of his children a farm, which were all around the Broxton area. Hope this helps, since I'm doing it from this poor memory of mine. Now, I've gotta go and type some more birth certificates so I can go home and get back to all of you!! Melody > Hi Melody, > I don't have your L.J Kirkland anywhere in my database. 3. Steve and other list members, Does anyone know if this Joseph Tanner might be related to Jim Tanner? As you might remember Joshua Kirkland is buried in Ward Cemetery on 'Jim Tanner's farm' in Coffee County. Just curious if there is a connection between Joshua Kirkland and these Tanner men and if so, what that connection might be. I find it very odd that Joshua Kirkland was also in Florida the same time as Joseph Tanner. I think I might have answered this somewhat by my own questions. In looking further, I see a Hester Ward who was married to a John W Tanner. Hester was born in 1830 and they married 5-18-1878. Have no further info on John W Tanner, but think I may have found the connection between the Kirkland and Tanner families :-) Hester Ward was a daughter of Zilpha Kirkland and James P Ward. Zilpha Kirkland (1795/1848) was a daughter of Richard Kirkland, Jr and a sister to Joshua Kirkland. James P Ward was her second husband and they had 11 children. James P Ward was a son of James Ward and Priscilla Gibbs (no further info on these folks), I imagine if we could find the Land Records for any of these Tanner/Ward/ Kirkland men, they must have owned land very near to one another or might have even bought/sold land to one another. It's funny how you can have something and look at it for years only to pick it up much later, re-examine it, and find clues you had overlooked all that time :-) I've always been curious why Joshua Kirkland was buried on this Jim Tanner's farm and not in the Kirkland Cemetery with his wife. Finally I think I get it...or at least some of it :-) Steve, I hope my ramblings haven't created more confusion for you in your search for Joseph Tanner. I just find there too many coincidences for there not to be a connection between these families. If you find your Joseph Tanner, would you mind letting me know? It might help to answer more of my own questions. 3. Hi Melody....... It's me again :-) Mind if I ask about your Sears/Ricketson connections? I have several names that I can't 'tie into' any other families and am wondering if they might be some of yours. I have a Luraney Sears, born 1811 and married to an Allen Ricketson. No further data on Allen. Luraney's parents were David Sears and Levicy Nobles. I have David as being born 1791 NC/died 1889 Coffee Co., Ga; Levicy born 1792 Ga/ died 1868 Coffee Co., Ga. I show 14 children born to this couple. I show David Sears as having one brother named Harrison Sears, born @1799 and have their father listed as John Sears. Harrison Sears had a son named James Sears, born @1838. Somewhere along these Sears lines is a woman named Ella V Sears 1881/1946 who married my grandfather's brother Matthew M Fiveash. I have never been able to tie Ella in to the correct family. Another researcher has her listed as a daughter of William H Sears but this can't be correct because he also shows William H Sears as being born in 1873. If that date is correct, he could possibly be a brother of Ella but not her father :-) William H Sears, according to this same researcher, was a son of James Sears who was son of Harrison Sears. Confusing? Now you can see why I'm asking if you can help to clear some of this up for me :-) Now, on the Ricketson surname. I have a Josephine Ricketson, daughter of Bryant Ricketson and Nancy Smith. Don't have a birth or death year for Josephine but show that she was the first wife of David Kirkland (son of Joshua Kirkland). David was born/died in Coffee Co., Ga ...1869/1936. David and Josephine were married 2-4-1882 in Coffee Co., Ga and I have them with three children (Nancy, Ida and Josephine). After the death of Josephine Ricketson Kirkland, David then married Sarah Sallie Davis and had 12 children. Next I have a Harriet Riketson, daughter of Joseph Ricketson (no further info), who married Hiram Sears (1814/1901). I don't have any dates on Harriet nor marriage date, but show they had two children (Soloman and Elias born 1834 and 1835). Hiram Sears was also married to Margaret Mixon but I don't know who was the first/second wife. These are all the Ricketson people I have in my database but I'd really like to be able to tie them into the proper/correct families if possible. Take your time in answering. Hopefully I won't have too many more questions for you :-) Thanks for any help you can offer! 3. Hi Joyce, Yes, Joshua Kirkland is a son of Richard Kirkland, Jr and wife Hester Walker. I am showing Richard and Hester Kirkland to have had 8 children: (All birth years are @) Richard Kirkland,III, born 1790; married Catherine Sims Elizabeth Kirkland, born 1793; married Abner Sirmans, Sr. Sarah Kirkland, born 1801...no further info Hester Kirkland, born 1786...no further info Joshua Kirkland...my ancestor Moses Kirkland, born 1788; married Margaret Carver Thigpen Zilpha Kirkland, born 1795; married James Jones Timothy Kirkland, born 1799; married Anna Holiday Here are the 'notes' I have on Richard Kirkland, Jr.: Richard Kirkland Jr., the ancestor of a considerable family connection of "Wiregrass" Georgia, was born in South Carolina about 1765, a son of Richard Kirkland, Sr. (RS) who died about 1788 in Effingham Co., Ga. Ricahrd Kirkland, Jr. moved with his parents from S.C. to Georgia soon after the Revolutionary War, and he grew up in Screven and Effingham Counties. It is thought that he married in Burke County. Richard Kirkland, Jr. died in Bulloch Co in 1804 and left a Will dated July 17, 1802. The Will was probated on July 30, 1804 and it named Garrett Williams and James Williams as executors. The Will provided that his wife Hester have the use of the estate as she saw fit but if she should remarry, then it would be divided among the children. She did remarry and her second husband was Archibald Miller and they had one son, Archibald Miller, Jr, born in 1809. Richard Kirkland, Jr was granted land in Effingham Co in 1786 and at other times, and record is found of a deed dated Feb 17, 1798 from him to Gideon Tillman for 200 acres on the Canoochee Creek, and another deed to 400 acres on '15-Mile Creek'. Both tracts were in Bulloch Co., Ga. Richard Kirtkland, Jr was a Revolutionary Soldier and seved in the South Carolina Militia. His father also served in the SC Militia for 153 days in the way. Hester Kirkland Miller and her second husband and child, together with most of her Kirkland children, all moved to Appling Co. early in 1820 and settled in the portion now of Coffee County. Some of the sources for my notes on these Kirkland ancestors are from other Kirkland researchers willing to share information; I am a list member of the Kirkland group at yahoogroups as well. Lastly, here are some 'notes' I have on William Franklin Kirkland: William Franklin Kirkland was born in Jefferson Co., Fl but grew up in Coffee Co., Ga where his parents moved in his boyhood. He was married in Berrien (now Lanier) County, on December 24, 1865 to Sarah "Sallie" Newbern a daughter of Dryden Newbern and Elizabeth Sirmans. She was born in 1847 and died at her home near Dupont, Clinch Co., Ga. on July 13, 1921. To she and William Franklin Kirkland were born 14 children (Huxford Vol. II, page 170-171). William Franklin Kirkland is shown in the 1850 census as Francis M, age three years. he later changed his name to William Francis and was generally known as "Frank" Kirkland. William Franklin Kirkland saw service in the Civil War, though only 17 years old at the time. He was drafted along with other youths and with old men during the last year of the war and served in the Georgia Militia in the battles against General Sherman. For this service, he was granted a pension not long before his death. His home was on Land Lot 442, 7th Land District of Clinch County, Ga. where he settled soon after marriage. He continued to own it and lived there until his death on Nov 3, 1924. Following the death of his wife in 1921, he married her niece, Mrs. Sallie Newbern Sanford (born 1851), daughter of Thomas Newbern and widow of Lewis M Stanford; his second wife survived him. William Franklin Kirkland and both his wives are buried at North Cemetery. I know you didn't ask for all this info but I thought since I was answering your question, I'd go on and send it all to you and the list members. If there is anything else I can share, please ask :-) I believe in sharing and comparing :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr -----Original Message----- From: Joyce Ruis <jruis@nbank.net> To: GACOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com <GACOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, March 03, 2001 11:51 AM Subject: Re: [GACOFFEE] One of my Lines > > > Joshua Kirkland >Joshua Kirkland (son of Richard, grandson of Richard) was born 1803 >in Ga. and died about 1880 in Coffee County, Ga. >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > >Hi Nancy, > >Is your Joshua, s/o Richard, the Richard Kirkland, Jr. b. abat 1765 in S. 3. Nancy it very well could be wrong these are secondary lines of mine I have been looking at trying to unravel who is who in the Sears family. The way I have the Granthams hooked to the Sears is through Anna(John1798/John1765) who married Jackson Grantham 1830-1910 son of Elijah and Elizabeth Whitley. I am just trying to determine if my Grantham info is correct.
