    2. Jeff, I don't have Margaret Fales' parents either. I'll look for them, but Betty Kirkland Schledensky didn't have them listed in her Kirkland book, so they may not be easy to find. 2. Jeff and Clyde, this is a really interesting story and I'd like to know the answer to a question that I've asked many people: WHERE IS THE WARD CEMETERY??? I'd like to go there on one of our next little excursions. I think there's two Ward cemeteries. Melody > Hey Clyde, > I believe that the source of my information was there. 2. Melody
    3. HI Connie, Just got home from work.. This Frank Kirkland is buried at the Kirkland Family cemetery and is believed to be Kiler and Alice's son. Read on and I'll post what I have that is different than yours. > Comments, especially if obvious errors would greatly be appreciated! > Does anyone have Frank in their line? Thanks, Connie > > > 1. I have that Kiler was born abt 1854, bit what do I know??<G> Alice is buried at the Kirkland family cemetery and we have just received another confirmation (back in October) that Kiler is there too. He is buried by his son June (Eugene) who is by Kiler's 2nd wife, Lula Tuten. We haven't come across Lula's parents and would like to know who they were. > Children of KYLER KIRKLAND and ALICE KIRKLAND are: > i. ALIF OR OLIVE5 KIRKLAND, b. October 10, 1880; m. JOE MELVIN. **It should be Aleph Kirkland and I have the same date. She died 10/5/1946 and Joseph Alonzo Melvin born 5/101878-3/22/?? They are buried at Reed Branch Church Cem. near Broxton. They have a baby that died and was buried out at Kirkland Cem. Their granddaughter, Michelle was on this list and she may be able to supply the death year for Joe.** > ii. DAVID KIRKLAND, b. June 22, 1890; m. ANNE SOUTHERN (SOUTHERLAND?). **These are the parents of our beloved Walter Kirkland, who passed away last year. Birthdate is right and I have May 03, 1942 as the death date in Orange Co., FL. They were married in Coffee County on 9/3/1915 and her name was Annie Ruth Southerland.** Check out the picture on the Coffee County website at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5941/davekirkland.html > iii. BELL YOUNGBLOOD. **This is Denah Kirkland Skipper's line and she is supposed to be on the list also** Check out Kiler, Jr. as a young man at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5941/kiler_jr.html > v. LULA KIRKLAND, m. LONNIE BAKER. **This is not who married Lonnie Baker. Aunt Lula married John Hampton Allen and she was born on 12/21/1894 I'm not sure if her grandchildren are on the list or not. It's been a long time since I've heard from some of ya'll.<G> > vi. MARGIE KIRKLAND, b. 1882; m. W.B. WILLIAMS. **Margie or Margaret or Marjorie was born 12/8/1882 and Married W. B. Williams aka Bub) This si the only family that we haven't heard from and we would like to find them!! My mom doesn't remember them or if they ahd any children or not. When Kiler died, her papers were served to her in Laurens County, Ga. You can see a picture of them at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5941/margaretkirkland.html I just pulled up the picture and will have to correct it apparently. It doesn't do her justice. > vii. MARY JANE KIRKLAND, b. October 27, 1873; d. September 06, 1875. **She is buried at the Kirkland cemetery > viii. JOHN ABRAHAM KIRKLAND, b. April 19, 1876; d. July 1936; m. DELLA > THOMAS. **John Abraham..dates are right. wife was Martha Ella Thomas, born January 24, 1877, died December 03, 1953 They were married on 7/14/1895 in Coffee and the five children were theirs. He married Betty Tanner on November 19, 1922 in Coffee County. You can see John A. and his wife (?) at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5941/johnabraham.html I believe that is wife is probably Betty (Shug) Tanner as I also have two other pictures of his first wife and they look nothing alike. (of course John A. doesn't look like himself either in those pictures, but we know it's him.<G>) John A. and his wife Mrs. John A. (?) are buried at the Douglas City cemetery and have a very nice marked grave near his son's. > ix. ELLIJAY KIRKLAND, b. January 27, 1879; m. MARY LAURA MCGOVERN. **My great-grandfather Ellijay or LJ) died 9/21/1942. (My cousin Laura ws born on 1/27 and I was born on (/21, although not in the same years of his dates of course!!) Mary Laura was called Laura, born October 27, 1881 and died 1/10/1919 of the flu after nursing several of her neighbors and family members. She also had dark red hair and I have several pictures of her that I need to place on the web site. they had 12 children with only 8 of them living to become adults. He married 2nd Belle Hursey who lived near them. Belle's sister Victoria was married to Laura's brother TJ. Belle brought to the marriage son Billy, who then became a Kirkland, whether officially or not, and all of his descendants go by the Kirkland name. Belle and LJ had three children of thier own, one of whom is still living. Belle and LJ are buried together and Laura is a few spaces down with their infant children in between them. They are all buried at Reedy branch as are other family members. > x. ALICE KIRKLAND, b. October 1886; m. LONNIE BAKER. **Alice 11/19/1918 and is buried at Sand Hill Church Cemetery where other Kirklands are buried. This is just up the road from the Kirkland cemetery. > xi. FRANK KIRKLAND, b. 1888; d. October 07, 1889. Hope this helps, Melody

Hello Jeff, I had been told that BH, Sr., was buried in Ward Cemetery. When I saw his tombstone in Campground I questioned the descendant who had told me about his burial at Ward. I was told that as far as he knew, he was still buried at Ward, that he knew nothing about a tombstone in Campground. The next time I went to Campground I had a probe with me. I probed the area in front of the tombstone and found that there is a vault buried there. I found that puzzling, since vaults have not been in use that long. Later, I discovered that "he" had been moved from Ward to Campground. Now, you say a "ceremonial" shovel of dirt was taken to Camp Ground? Well, I wasn't there, but if "something" wasn't moved to Campground and buried in a vault, then I wonder who is buried in the place where BH, Sr.'s tombstone is? Clyde

    1. [GACOFFEE] One more Tanner mystery
    2. Jeff Tanner
    3. Mary Douglass remarried to Benjamin Thomas after the death of John Tanner (John died between 1818-1820 in Emanuel Co.). I'm told that she had at least two sons by this 2nd marriage, Benjamin Jr., and perhaps Lawton? I haven't seen it myself, but am told she appears in the 1840 census, near her sons Berry Hampton, Robert Green, and Elijah Tanner in Telfair Co., living alone with 2 or 3 young children. Anyone out there know if you're descended from this 2nd marriage of Mary Douglass Tanner Thomas? Thanks, Jeff

    1. [GACOFFEE] Berry Hampton "Bunk" TANNER, Jr.

    3. I may have posted this before, but with new people on the list I thought I'd try it again. There is a legislative act passed on 21 January, 1852. It states that Berry Hampton Tanner has applied to change his son's name from Hampton Brickle to Hampton Tanner. This Berry Hampton Tanner was the son of John and Mary Douglass Tanner, and was the first sheriff of Coffee County. There are a couple of versions of the story, but BH's wife, Eliza Taylor, is said to have taken "Bunk" into her arms and raised him as her own. Does anyone know the identity of the biological mother of Berry Hampton "Bunk" Tanner? The above name, Brickle, would seem like it might be the right name. However, there was another sibling of this affair -- a daughter. I'm told that the daughter later married a Powell from Lumber City. The name Girtman has somehow also been associated with this relationship. Our Tanner family used to attend Powell reunions in Lumber City due to this relationship (some may still). If anyone can clear this up, I would be much appreciative. "Bunk" Tanner was my gg grandfather. Jeff

    3. No problem Melody! Wow! The Coffee list has come alive! I know of several connections between the Tanners and Kirklands. Then, you can't overlook Tanners who often married Meeks and then Meeks often married Kirklands, and Youngbloods married both Kirklands and Tanners, and the Davises, Lotts and Wards got mixed up on all sides and it gets to looking like one big mess on paper! Berry Hampton Tanner, Sr., (heretofore referred to as "BH, Sr.") son of John and Mary Douglass Tanner married 1st Eliza Taylor. He married 2nd, Hester Ward -- NOT the same Hester Ward who married John Wesley Tanner -- more on that later. There were no children by his marriage to Hester. (BH, Sr. was buried in Ward cemetery near Hester. His grave stone was later moved to Camp Ground Cemetery in Bacon Co. next to Eliza, but his body was left undisturbed as it had been about 100 years since his burial in 1881. A "ceremonial" shovel of dirt was taken to Camp Ground.) Children of BH Tanner who married Kirklands: Son, Elijah, married Margaret Kirkland, dau of Moses and Margaret Carver Kirkland dau, Lydia A E Tanner, married Moses J. Kirkland, son of Moses and Margaret This made all their children double first cousins. John Wesley Tanner, who married Hester Ward, is son of the above Elijah Tanner and Margaret Kirkland. I believe this John is also known as "Mudge". I don't know much about the descendents of Robert Green, (brother of BH, Sr.) but according to the information on the "Descendents of Cal Tanner" web site, a grandson of Robert Green Tanner, Lester, (son of Thaddeus and Vicy Jordan Tanner) married Jeannette Kirkland. It says Emily, Robert Green's daughter, married Merritt Meek (and here we go again). As Melody said, my grandfather, Baynard Tanner, son of Marshall, married a Kirkland. But his maternal grandmother was also a Kirkland. She was Elizabeth "Betty" Kirkland, dau of Zene William Kirkland (son of Moses and Margaret). She married Hymrick Meek, Jr. Their daughter, Frances (Fannie), married Marshall Tanner. Marshall was the son of Berry Hampton (Bunk) Tanner, Jr. (son of BH, Sr.). At least some of the Tanner and Kirkland lands were very close to each other. That map Melody is referring to shows it pretty well. My closest Kirklands and Tanners grew up on opposite sides of Highway 32 just west of Nicholls. There were two Hester Wards. The information I have is confusing, though. One Hester Ward was born 1830, dau of James Preston Ward and Zilphia Kirkland. A descendent one of Hester's older brothers writes that she married John W. Tanner. The John Wesley Tanner I have her married to wasn't born until Oct 15, 1859, which makes him 29 years younger than she. They weren't married until May 18, 1878 making him 18 and her 48. Can anyone clear this up? Does anyone have proof that Joseph Tanner was John Tanner's father? I can't buy that theory. The name Joseph (or any version of Cal for that matter) was never passed down in our family. That wouldn't be like us at all. Just look sometime how many John Wesleys, Berry Hamptons, Greens, and Elijahs there are. But no Josephs or Cals. John Tanner sort of appears out of nowhere in Montgomery Co. in 1805 on Tax and Jury lists. He is the only Tanner on these particular lists. In 1805, he was not married, did not have any children, and was at least 21 years of age. John Tanner appears on no censuses. He died between 1818-1820, presumably in Emanuel County, as that is where the family lived then. The Emanuel Co. Courthouse burned ca 1830, destroying all county records. The best theory I've heard is that he was a descendent of the Lt. John Tanner who was an original British soldier at Ft. Frederica on St. Simons Island with James Oglethorpe in about 1736. After the Fort was abandoned, this John Tanner was granted land in St. George Parish (became Burke Co. after the Rev. War). He lived near the same families in St. George Parish that our ancestor John Tanner lived near in Montgomery Co. Apparently, squatters took over their lands in St. George Parish during the War, and they all migrated together towards southern Washington Co. That portion later became Montomery Co., and later Emanuel. Jeff >Steve, >Sorry about that!! Boy, is my face red!! They were farming in Coffee County during the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Their children include Ira C., Bertha, Ethel, Dora and Dolly. (I'm not sure if there were any others or not.) John and Martha Ella were divorced. She died Dec. 3, 1953, and is buried in Douglas City Cemetery. I have some information on their children, if you are interested. > Need some help myself.
