Jeff, Well now I am embarrased, but glad! You solved my mystery. It was my mistake when I looked t my record. It is 1880 and your are so correct. Thank you. Jeff, I saw the actual entry of the two that I sent! (Grass Valley Sutro, 24 1987 means that I ordered the film from the Sutro library in San Francisco and looked at it in my library in Grass Valley on that date!) "all rest born in GA" means that is what the census taker recorded. We can hope that is what they told him and that they know! So, I still need to know about the Census 1860 with Hampton P Tanner and Hester. It is possible that I could have typed the wrong year myself! I will try to look for my notes or the copy that I made and verify that. I will get back to you on that. I had not thought about ME making a mistake when I transferred the date to my computer. :) What you have said would certainly explain my confusion. I will go look in my files right now. Thanks, Jeff Jennie **************** >Jennie, >Here is what I have learned. This second entry in the Huxford source has >some "typos". Clyde, Thanks so much for the kind offer. I would truly appreciate your help if you get the opportunity to look this up. I received my information from Rachel Caves who kindly helped me out because before she took the trouble to find this for me, my GGrandfather was a complete brick wall. I have not actually seen the census information for myself so don't know what is stated about Warren Tanner or the relationship between the two. I keep hoping to get the time to get up to Douglas to do some research, but can never seem to get a break to do so. Thanks again, Christy (in Florida) Clyde Hooks wrote: > > "C. In recent info on the Ricketson family, I noticed Mary Frances Ricketson d/o Bryant Ricketson. She married James Asberry Day on March 30, 1878 in Broxton, Coffee Co., GA. They are buried in the Day Cemetery, Coffee Co., GA; off State Hwy 206. She is my great great grandmother. I will be glad to share information on this line. Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon
>Jeff, > So who was the mother of BH, Jr? Wish I knew. The story is told one way that she "lived up on [near] the river". Another version says she was hired to care for Eliza, who must have been in poor health. The only clue we have is that there was an act passed by the Georgia Legislature in 1852 legitimizing him, and changing his name from Hampton Brickle to Hampton Tanner. Other family lore uses the name Girtman. BH Jr. is supposed to have a sister, who married a Powell from Lumber City. Perhaps her name was Girtman? The story continues that BH Sr. rode up on horseback and without dismounting reached down, picked up the baby (BH Jr. or "Bunk") and rode off while his mother was washing clothes. He was still of nursing age and BH Sr. hired a negro woman to suckle him until he could be weaned. BH Sr. was apparently unaware that a daughter was on the way. Some years later, BH Sr. and Jr. were supposedly in Savannah together when BH Sr. spotted Bunk's mother. He showed Bunk his mother and said that he should go meet her, but Bunk said that his mother was dead (Eliza had already passed away) and didn't go meet her. It was the only time Bunk ever saw his real mother. > Do you have the census record of Elijah Tanner for the year 1950? >I have Green's, but not his. I do not. Was he not nearby? Jeff
He was probably hiding from his wife at the time, and hid so well the census takers couldn't find him either. That was the year BH Jr. was born, and Eliza probably wasn't very happy about that since she didn't have anything to do with it! I should have added that in 1840, my friend says his name looks more like "Farmer" than Tanner. But he lives near his brothers, Green and Elijah, so that shouldn't be hard to figure out. Their mother is supposed to live nearby as well. Take care, Jeff >Thanks. I know they missed some people. My friend who has researched him thoroughly can't find him in any 1850 census. In Huxford's Pioneer of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol. I, pg. 271, in a write-up on Berry Hampton Tanner, he listed the 1850 census of Telfair County as a reference. Yesterday I looked through the published books on the 1850 censuses for Telfair and Appling counties and couldn't find him. The book we have at the library doesn't list a compiler or place or date of publication. It's called "1850 Census Records of Telfair County, Georgia." I think it was sold by the Huxford Genealogical Society. Does anyone know if B. H. was listed in the 1850 census, and if so, where? Thanks. Clyde
In the 1989 reprint of the Coffee County Cemetery Book, a note was added for B. H. Tanner. NOTE: In February of 1989, the headstone of B. H. Tanner (not his remains) was relocated in the Camp Ground Cemetery in Alma, Georgia. This was done by family descendants so his headstone would be next to that of his first wife, and the mother of his children. He had no children by his second wife. His remains were not moved. An additional page was added, after page 473, containing a hand-written note listing the inscriptions on the tombstones of Eliza and B. H. Tanner. The page also contains a photo of the markers. It starts off "B. H. Tanner grave moved from Old Ward Cemetery in a field on Was (sic) Tanner farm to Camp Ground Cemetery near Alma, Ga. Relocated Feb. 1989." Now, back to the other problem. When I saw the tombstone in Camp Ground, located northwest of Alma, and was told by a descendant that as far as he knew, B. H. was still in the Ward Cemetery, I was confused. I still am. I probed the area in front of the tombstone in Camp Ground, hoping to prove that the earth had or had not been dug, to bury some remains of B. H. When I probed, I struck cement, about six inches below the surface. It appeared to be the top of a vault. I suppose it could have been a slab, that had sunk over the years. Previously, I have found slabs, buried several inches below the surface, with inscriptions on them. I don't have any intentions of going down there to unearth whatever it is, but I sure am curious about what or who it is. Clyde

Grave markers in the Coffee County book are in alphabetical sequence, with no information about row or column. I'm not sure if Sweetwater has been surveyed and published or not. You might want to post a query on the Atkinson County site. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Atkinson?admin I live at Belvedere, a suburb of North Augusta, just across the Savannah River from Augusta. Like Evans, Belvedere is not incorporated. Clyde

There were several Warren Tanners. The census would have stated the relationship between Wesley Bullard and Warren Tanner. If you would like for me to do so, the next time I go to the library, I can look in the death certificate index to find the date and place of death. Knowing that, you could look for an obituary, or obtain a copy of his death certificate. Clyde

I have a much more recent Tanner mystery. My great-grandfather (who was estranged from my great-grandmother so not much is known about him) was named Wesley Bullard, b. about 1863 in Appling County. In the 1910 census (a year after my grandmother's birth) he is reported in Coffee County as living in the Warren Tanner household along with his two adult sons, Elias (age 20) and Frank (age 18). These sons were from his previous marriage. He died in 1936 and is buried in the Tanner Church Cemetery in an unmarked grave. I would like to hear from anyone who knows who Warren Tanner was; I'd like to find out what the connection was between my ggrandfather and Warren Tanner. If anyone knows who Warren Tanner was, or where the Tanner Church Cemetery is located, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Christy
