    1. [GACOFFEE] Quaker Cemetery, Camden, SC
    2. Nancy Parr
    3. Afternoon, I failed to mention last night that we also visited Quaker Cemetery whilein Camden yesterday. This is the place Richard Rowland Kirkland is buried. Its a very pretty, well kept cemetery. When we first drove in, we noticed that the 'streets' are named....and there were brochures for the cemetery :-) I was surprised to see the brochures but found it to be very helpful as it listed some of the more prominent grave sites. There is a brief 'history' of the cemetery on the back sheet. This cemetery was founded in 1759; began as 4 acres and now has approximately 50 acres. The monument at Richard Rowland Kirkland's grave is very large (wide and tall). It briefly tells of his heroism at Fredericksburg and his death in the battle of Chickamauga. His monument is located in an area called "Little Arlington" and has a US flag and Confederate flag flying in the plot. There are several other graves in this "Little Arlington" including two men who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their service during WW1. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all cemeteries could have brochures telling of their history and even including listings of those buried there? At first I thought it rather odd to have these brochures but then realized just what a find it truly was :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr

    3. Gail, Just to make sure we're on the same 'page, this is the Kyler/Cuyler Kirkland who married Alice Kirkland, right? Earlier this month, Melody and Clyde Hooks posted the date of death on him as 3-16-1918 and that he is buried in Kirkland Cemetery. I don't show a place of death but show that his wife Alice is buried at Rock Hill Cemetery near Sand Hill. Anyone know if this is in Coffee Co? 3. Hi Christy and Barbara :-) I'm so thankful Barbara answered your question on Horry County. Having moved ehre only recently, I'm not familiar with all the locations of the counties in the state. I'll just add that Camden,SC is in Kershaw County and is located about 25 miles north of Columbia on Highway 1. 3. Evening Everyone, This is especially for Melody.......I found the house!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, we went up to Camden today and spent over three hours at the Camden Museum and Archives. There was a very nice older lady who was especially helpful. You could tell she knew her history of Camden and Kershaw County :-) She was very proud of her knowledge and she was baffled and stumped that we weren't finding anything on the house. She, Ray and I spent almost three hours looking through book after book; reading the note from Melody and then looking through more books, only to re-read the letter to see what we were 'missing'. Based on the message from Melody (posted here last Monday), all we knew was the house had once been used for a 'stage coach mile marker' known as 'four mile house' and was later owned by a Kirkland family. We looked at everything in the building on the Kirkland families but came up empty-handed each time. We had just about given up and I'd already asked her to make a couple of copies of pages for me. She was at the copier doing this when another lady came in. Not to be 'outdone' because you could tell all this had really flustered her, she turned to this 'repeat researcher' and asked her if she might know of the house we were seeking. In a matter of seconds, we had a file folder in our hands and she was as delighted as I was :-) Cut to the chase.....we weren't able to actually find directions to the exact location of the house. She is going to find the directions and call me ASAP. See, the house is not directly on the highway and it's privately owned now so there are obviously gates up to keep the general public out :-) Here's the deal. I have several copied sheets of information on the house. Do you want me to post all of it on the list? Or do those interested want to email me and I can snail copies that way. You decide; whatever works best for everyone. A little 'snippet' of info is this. The origins of the plantation's name can be traced to a 1767 deed of 500 acres to Sarah Nesbitt. The property was purchased by John Boykin and three other gentlemen in 1831 and divided into four parcels, each with access to the spring. Thomas Jefferson Kirkland, coauthor of Historic Camden later owned it, and in 1913 it was converted into a tourist home known as Kirkland Villa. The present owners purchased the home in 1974 and began a careful and extensive preservation of the dwelling. The name is now known as the 'Cool Springs' house. Just a little something to whet your interest :-) The photos are beautiful (although they are just zerox copies). Regards, Nancy E Parr

    3. Hi Denah and all, Unfortunately I've not have the priviledge of seeing a copy of the Kirkland Source Book that many speak of. I've only 'heard' of the two volumes through researchers on this list and on the Kirkland list at Yahoogroups. One suggestion I made to Denah was to see if she might find a copy of this book at the sale this weekend; or any other local history books that include any Richard Kirklands in the index. I'm the first to admit that much of my information above Richard Kirkland married to Hester Walker is from other researchers. Several come to mind; Ida Kirkland Boyce, Larry Kirkland of Jacksonville, Fl, Walter Kirkland (now deceased) of this group. These folks in particular shared their findings with me either by way of reports, email messages, etc. And then there is the abundance of information shared here on the mailing list with all you terrific researchers :-) Like many, when I first began my research I didn't know the importance of documenting sources. Last year I had a hard drive crash and luckily had a gedcom with my 'history' on back-up. However, when I downloaded it, I misread the instructions for noting the sources and now all that info shows the sources as NANCY.FTM.gedcom. I've spent the better part of this past year trying to redocument my sources but fall way short of having it completed. I agree wth Jeff and Denah; can we prove any of this? Are we any closer to finding 'proof' of the parents of some of these Richard's? I keep my fingers crossed and hope we get lucky one day and sort it all out. Until that time, it's alot of fun working with all of you :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr -----Original Message----- From: denah skipper <dfs01@hotmail.com> To: GACOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com <GACOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, March 29, 2001 2:43 PM Subject: [GACOFFEE] Richard Kirklands-Fairfax Co. 3. I have a note here which I do not have a source for. Maybe Melody knows it. It may have even come from the "Descendents of Richard Kirkland" book. But it was read to me by my aunt over the phone. So, there's my source. My paraphrased version: Richard Kirkland was a man with no heirs other than a "son of a sister in Scotland". Richard Kirkland's will was either dated or probated Jan 13, 1724, in Lancaster Co., VA. Seems to me I remember something about his will being written on his deathbed, but that he was of sound mind. I also have some other dates written by these names, but don't remember now what they mean. Next to Richard Kirkland I have (1709-1727), and under "son of sister of Scotland" I have (d. 1804). I got the impression that the "son of the sister in Scotland" was Richard Kirkland, and that he came to America to inherit his uncle's estate. Now here' my theory: This Richard Kirkland married Mary Snoden/Snowden in Virginia. I understand that the Snodens/Snowdens were well off therefore, Richard Kirkland's inheritance would have had to have been impressive to earn Mary's hand. Their children moved to SC. Our Richard Kirkland, b. 1765, is a grandson of Richard and Mary. Can we prove any of that? Jeff >Hi Everyone, >I sent an email to Nancy Parr and thought I would ask my ?s here also. >I am trying to find out more info on the father of Richard Kirkland,Jr.- >b.1765 S.C.d.1804 in Bulloch Co.Ga.His father was Richard Kirkland Sr. >who died in 1788 in Effingham Co.Ga.Nancy told me that there is a >reference in the Kirkland Resource Books that this Richard Sr. is the s/o >a Richard Kirkland who died before 1743 in Fairfax Co.Va.I had access to >this Kirkland book when I lived in Jacksonville,Fl.Does anyone here with >those books happen to know of any other "tidbits" of info concerning this?I >have moved to Richmond,Va.and I think I might be able to find out some more >about this line with a little bit of help. For example: >1)possible names of this Richard Sr.'s wife? >2)I have 4 children for them-Richard Jr.,John,Isaac and Samuel. Were there >anymore children? >3)Does anyone have any idea where in S.C. 3. Hi Connie, First of all, I spoke incorrectly in a recent post to the list. My Pearlie Kirkland is NOT a daughter of Joshua, but rather a daughter of Wm. Franklin Kirkland; Joshua would have been her grandfather. I am sorry for the misleading information and am also sending this to the list stating my mistake :-) Now, let's discuss James/John Cuyler Kirkland. This can be tricky because there were actually TWO men (that I'm aware of) with this name! And to further confuse the issue, some folks call him 'John Cuyler' while others show his name as 'James Cuyler' Kirkland. I have it listed as James/John in my data based on statements from two grandaughters of the brother of my Pearlie Kirkland. My Pearlie Kirkland did indeed have a brother named James (John) Cuyler Kirkland. The info you show for him is correct in that it does match what I have; he was born 10-12-1870/ died 3-19-1952 and married Charity Hughes on 1-12-1902. I have 12 children for this couple which include: Jeptha, died before 2000; no further data Stella Catherine, born abt. 1912; married Edward Carrol Austin John, married Willie Mae Readdock Sarah Geneva; married M Newton Young; 4 children Elma, born 2-24-1908; married James Franklin Stalvey Lillie, died before 2000; no further info Willis, died before 2000; no further info Frank, died before 2000; no further info Sue Lynn, born abt. 1921; married Palmore 'Parry' Harrell; 3 children Charity; married ? Stalvey; no further info Pearlie and James/John Cuyler Kirkland's father William Franklin Kirkland had a brother with this same name. Here's the info on THIS James/John Cuyler Kirkland: James/John Cuyler Kirkland was born 10-29-1849 in Madison Co., Fl. a son of Joshua Kirkland and Sarah Fender. He died 6-27-1928 in Ware Co., Waycross, Ga. He is buried at Kettle Creek Cemetery in Waycross, Ware Co., Ga. He was married to Barbara Thigpen on 3-4-1866 In Ware Co., Ga. Barbara Thigpen was born 4-8-1846, a daughter of Travis T Thigpen and Mary Davis (source: Luther Thigpen). Barbara died 8-16-1924 in Ware Co and is also buried at Kettle Creek Cemetery. I have 10 children for James/John Cuyler and Barbara Kirkland: David Cuyler, born 1-2-1868; died 4-10-1934 Lilian Virginia, born 12-16-1869; married Lemuel Miller; 5 children Joshua Mose, born 4-19-1871; died 4-7-1933 Fl. Stafford, born 7-28-1873; died 11-16-1940 William Frank, born 11-30-1875; died 5-11-1946 Fl. Travis James, bor 9-27-1878; died 9-7-1958 Fl. Kiler K, born 9-11-1880; died 10-27-1943 Fl. Alfred L, born 11-26-1883; married Etta B. ?; 4 children Carrie, born 10-21-1895; died 7-24-1896 Maggie, born 10-21-1895; died 2-6-1962 Ware Co., Ga; buried Kettle Creek. If I only show the dates of birth/death, it means that I don't have other family info on the above children. Maybe this clears up my mistake on stating Pearlie and James/John Cuyler Kirkland were children of Joshua. I apologize again for this error; this brother/sister were children of Wm. Franklin Kirkland and grandchildren of Joshua. If anyone has further info on any of the above people, please submit it to the list. I'd love to fill in the blanks on the families of these children of both these men :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr -----Original Message----- From: Connie <erowe@surfsouth.com> To: Nancy Parr <nancparr@bellsouth.net> Date: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 1:47 AM Subject: James Kyler or Cuyler Or Kiler Kirkland >Hi Nancy. 3. I have that Robert Green Tanner b abt 1810 and died 1862 in Coffee County, GA who m Elmira Hall had a child, Delilah Tanner b 1835. She married Mose Kirkland, Jr., son of Moses Kirkaland and Margaret Peggy (Thigpen) Carter. I also have that Moses Jr also married Lydia Tanner, dau of Berry Hampton Tanner and Eliza Taylor. And I have his third wife as Lucy Pikren, dau of Elijah Pikren born 1816 and Catherine Girtman. This Elijah had another child, Susannah who married a Wilcox and they had child Winnie Wilcox who married Harrison Kirkland, son of Zenus William Kirkland and Penelope "Penny" Gaskins. Robert Green Tanner b 1810 also had a child Green Tanner b 1847 who married Mary. Don't know anything else about him. But see below the inf I have for the Green Tanner married into my husband's line. He is also born 1847. Are my lines mixed up here? The Green Tanner that I am interestd in is the one born abt 1847, son of Gray Tanner and Christina Roberts. This Green Tanner married Elizabeth Kemp and had a child, Laura Elizabeth Tanner b Dec 30, 1882 and married John Richard Rowe. Laura was supposed to have a brother, Green Tanner born 1888 and died 1976 and is buried at Kirkland Cemetery, Coffee Co., GA but really don't know anything else about him, since I mostly keep on the Rowe line.
