    3. Octavia, I still haven't heard from you and I can't find your address. I had written about the Emanuel County Marriage book that the Truitts had compiled and about it containing mistakes. I had written the Truitts and received a reply from them, after my last message. They apologized for the book, saying they were withdrawing it from sale, and offered to refund my money if I'd like to return the book. I did, but instead of getting a refund, I asked them to send me their "Emanuel County, Georgia 1820 - 1830 - 1840 Federal Census," and also their Emanuel County, Georgia 1850 Federal Census" books that they list at http://www.gagenbooks.com/bookstruittpm.htm. They did and as far as I can tell, they look good. Let me hear from you. Clyde

    1. [GACOFFEE] "All About Clans"
    2. denah skipper
    3. Hi everyone, I have a supplement in today's paper about a Celtic Heritage Festival here in Richmond this week.Below is a excerpt from the supplement: All About Clans: The word "clan" is derived from the Gaelic word "clann" meaning the children, offspring,or descendents.A "clan" is usually of a sufficient size to have established a territory and is likely to have a clan chief. Within the Scottish Highlands,in the 12th and 13th centuries the concept of "clan"grew beyond immediate family to cover an extended network of people who felt they had loyalites to a particular clan or chief. Conquests, alliances, and marriages often increased the clan territory. Eventually, as a Scottish monarchy became established and exercised control, the allocation of clan lands would be granted,or at least authorized by the king. The clan chief had duties which included providing help and support to clan members, resolution of disputes and exercising justice. The clan chief could also demand that clan members join him either in defending clan lands or in raids on adjoing territory to acquire more land, cattle, provisions,or to seek revenge against a rival clan.Over time, male sucession became the norm(although in modern times clan chiefs may be male or female). These days cheftainship is usually inherited from the previous chief, down the bloodline. In instances where a family dies out because the chief had no children, some genealogical research might be required. Many clans are associated with a specific area or areas. Many of the clan tents and several resources on the internet will have a map showing many of thses areas. However, there has always been movement of individuals and families.Although there is no definitive list of all clans there are many resources available online that can assist those that desire to research their own clan roots. I think I will try to hit this festival this weekend and see what I find! 1. [GACOFFEE] Elizabeth Pearson and Ila Ione Pearson/Coxwell
    2. Hi Folks, I'm new to the list and not sure if this made it through the first time. I'm researching my husband's gr-grandmother, Ila Ione Pearson/Coxwell.  I found her on the 1880 Coffee County, GA census as follows: 1880 Coffee County, Georgia Census index lists the following: Pearson, Elizabeth (38) b. GA, dau Ila (8) b.GA, Angel (6) b. GA and Georgia (2) b. GA. Ila told her son, E.J., that she was not born in Georgia, but instead was born in Gallup, NM, and was Navajo.  She also told him that John Coxwell was not his real father or his brother Joe's father.  We still don't know who their real father was, but the following census would seem to back up that part of her story: 1900 Census of Coffee County, GA: Coxwell, John  b. Apr 1861 (39) b. GA, parents b. GA Married 7 years to: Ila, b. Sep 1872 (27) b. GA, parents b. GA. children: Joe b. Jan 1891 (9) b. GA Elza b. Jul 1893 (6) b. GA Leroy b. Apr 1896 (4) b. GA >From the above census, we can conclude that John and Ila were married in 1893, the same year E.J. was born.  John was 32 and Ila was 20 when they married.  Joe was 2. Ila obviously was pregnant with E.J. at the time. I'm trying to find information on the person listed as Ila's mother on the 1880 census. I'd like to know if there is an adoption or birth record for Ila or her sisters...as it appears that at least Ila was not Elizabeth's birth child.  I'd also like to find a birth record for Joseph and also Elza Coxwell, Ila's sons.  I think Elza would've simply been listed as John Coxwell's son, but since Joseph was already 2 years old when Ila married John, perhaps there would be another name for him. (We're trying to find out who his father was....there is some question about the name "Entree or Entrie" as a possibility.) It is important for our family to know if Ila was Native American.  The physical features she passed on would surely indicate so.  (Her children and grandchildren certainly LOOK Native American!) I would like to know how Ila came to be with Elizabeth Pearson.  And....where/who was Elizabeth's husband...he was not listed on the 1880 Census? Thank you so much, Bev Tiner mbtin83@aol.com

    3. For those of you that take the Douglas Enterprise, I'm sure that you've been reading the articles that Julian Williams has been writing concerning Telfair and Coffee County. He has now put these articles on-line for all of us to enjoy and you can find them at: http://hometown.aol.com/jacksonvillega/myhomepage/index.html The main family in his articles is the Wilcox family, but there are a number of other families such as the Ashley, Manning, Coffee and Conner families. He also has some great pictures that you'll want to see. Take care, Melody
