I find no record of Mary Sears being maried to anyone else except Arthur Gillis. There is nothing said about her father, Hamilton Sears, killing a man named Andrson. That name is not even mentioned. There is not record of her children. Sorry I couldn't find the information you wanted. If there is any other way that I can help you plaease let me know. From Obituaries & Death Notices from the Douglas Breeze compiled by Catherine Fussell Wells November 21, 1903 The funeral of Emmitt White will be preached at the Nicholls Baptist church the first Sunday in December. It will be remembered that on that day one year ago he was killed by Lee Cribb. December 19, 1903 The Fate of Lee Cribb. His Lawyers Have Done all that Men Could do for a Client. The End. The Commission of physicians appointed last week to determine the condition of Lee Cribb has reported that he was sane, just what was thought they would and should do. Unless some other movement is made the murderer of two people has, before this reached the reader, been hanged, in compliance with the law 's demand. That he has met what he deserved is known to all. The murder of Emmet White and Marshall Holton was cold blooded, without an excuse, and we are surprised hat his execution has so long been delayed. That his relatives desired to shield him as long as possible is natural, and that the lawyers in the case have done everything in their power to save his life as long as hope lasted, is no more than every man in a place like the one Cribb and his relatives occupied would expect. While justice has been evaded for a long time in this man's case the tax payers of the county have grinned and groaned under the heavy burden imposed upon them, and form the lights before them the complaints along that lines have been just. Had there been any doubts as to the guilt of this man every man in Coffee county would have gladly endured his part of the tax-burden that justice might have been metted out, but in a plain case of aggravated murder, where there was no lack of proof, no cause for the deed, it did not appear that more than a fair trial and its expences should have been heaped upon the people. The Breeze does not believe that Gov. Terrell or Cribbs attorneys have been influenced or guided in this matter by anything except the law, as ti stands, and not by political trickery. Friday Morning. Sheriff Southerland, Deputy Graham and other guards with Cribb arrived in Douglas at 2 o'clock a.m., having come around by the way of Tifton, Cordele and Fitzgerald, and were detained by a wreck on the A. & B. all day Thursday. The entire party were worn out for sleep and rest, but Cribb was the most cheerful man in the crowd. When his breakfast was carried to him at 7 o'clock Friday morning he was sleeping soundly. His wife and child called to see him at 8:20, and was admitted to his cell to remain with him to the last moment. In answer to an inquiry form the Breeze as to any statement he desired to make the condemned man said he would make a statement before his execution to be taken in short hand which could be used. He desired Mr. John McLean to be present when it was made. We could not secure the statement but have about the substance however below: Mr. Cribb made a statement Friday morning in which he exonerated every one but himself. He said whiskey and bad associations had brought him to his doom. He thanked the officers of the jails for their kindness to him during his confinement and had nothing but thanks for his counsel, who made a good fight to save his life. The doomed man ascended the scaffold at 1:30 and at 1:38 the drop fell. He fell about seven feet, his neck was broken instantly, but the heart beats continued (for a few minutes afterward when life was pronounced extinct. Copy hard to read) Hope this is what everyone was looking for. Catherine, Thank you for the additional information on Lee Cribb. My daughter will once again be mortified as will her grandparents but I do appreciate learning all that was family lore is exactly that. It has been told that Lee was never hung. Did I miss an email here? I haven't read the one regarding M L Cribb that Mel was referring to. In Coffee County in Dec. of 1902, Lee Cribb, my children's 2nd great grandfather, at age 26 killed the Coffee Co. Sheriff and an innocent bystander who was loading his wagon. This was done in a drunken rage at his wife for having him jailed and then leaving him because of his abuse. Lee was convicted and sentenced to hang 1903. His tombstone reads the date of 1903 for his death. Lee is actually Leon W Cribb, son of Eli Warren Cribb and Dicey Nelson, Descendants of Jonathan Cribb, b. 1777 in NC. M L Cribb in Turner Co, GA is Miles L Cribb and committed murder in his wife's family is a son of Ezekiel Cribb and a descendant of Jeremiah Cribb b abt 1796 of the Jones Co, GA Cribb lines. I suspect a family relationship between Jeremiah and Jonathan perhaps as father and son, but have never found proof. In a way, I am glad that this has been placed into a media that can be accessed for posterity, but unfortunately there are still many family members mortified by what has happened in the past. Lee was hung over 100 years ago and the deaths by M L nearly that. Anyone wishing information on the Cribb lines in NC, SC, GA, AL or FL, please contact me. I have worked for many years on the surname and have quite a bit of information on the family lines, some link to my children, some do not. Kimberly Clark Kansas City, MO

Ok, I was so confused until I went to your website and read the article. The one that I was looking at happened in Turner County but was in the Coffee Copunty Progress and concerned the Hancock family. November 1913. I just couldn't find a Holton and thought I must be reading it wrong, especially since the type is small and the paper is faded. I'll see if I can find the Holton obit for you. Tom, Thank you for answering this. I was still trying to find Byrd Church. June, If you go to: http://www.mapquest.com/, you can see where Pridgen AND Snipesville is located, and how to get there. Pridgen is in Coffee Co., and Snipesville is in Jeff Davis Co. You can also click on Business Address, an find the church of your choice, but Byrd does NOT come up. Good luck, Kay --- "Tom B. Byrd CHurch is the name used by some of the older folks for Mt Pleasant Baptist CHurch. One of my Byrd relatives was supposedly "turned out of the CHurch" for "gossiping". About 3/4 the way on the road from Broxton to Snipesville, a sign will point left to Mt Pleasant CHurch. It is about a a mile on the left. The road it is on is the one from Pridgen to Snipesville. You may need a map to find Snipesville and Pridgen. Neither is very big. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Moring, I've just updated my Wiregrass web page. It's by no means complete. I've updated down to Bulloch County. I've been buzy removing non-working links and adding some new ones. In order to update it in some kind of organized fashion, I'm going county by county. So if you review it and have additional links to suggest for counties up to and including Bulloch (for now) please feel free to email me off list. Also I put in counties that "I" felt were Wiregrass and that I've had research in, if you feel I should add a county please email me that suggestion off list also. Also if I could request a favor from some of the list managers. If a county was created out of another and it would be a good idea for folks searching earlier records to check those counties also, but let me know when and the previous county names. (If you look as Atkinson County, you get a good idea of what I'm after.) Does anyone know anything else on this George Lewis I have a George W. Lewis [b] 8 June 1884 [d] 16 May 1943 Coffee Co. buried at Sandhill Church Cemetery, Nicholls, Coffee Co. I have him md. to Ardella Meeks [b] 17 August 1885 d/o Merritt Meeks & Emily J. Tanner. This Ardella Meeks and Charity Meeks [see below] are 1st cousins. I believe he md. Charity, and then md. Ardella in 1909 after Charity died in 1908. >Mrs. Geo. Lewis was Charity dau. of Bryant Meeks and Harriet Williams.
Looks like it might be Charity Meeks, b. June 27, 1891 daughter of William Bryant Meeks and Harriett Ardelia Williams. George Lewis later married to Ardelia Meeks, daughter of Merritt Meeks and Emily Tanner. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Lourice Merritt" <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: [GACOFFEE] obit...
