Hello Cobb Co: My ggg grandfather was killed in the Civil War while in F Co 8th Reg of the GA State Guards. He died in Polk Hospital in Rome GA. I believe he may be burried in Marietta National Cemetery. Would it be possible for a person to look in that cemetery for me to see if he is. I was told that many times the family claimed the body of the Confederate Soldier. He enlisted from Alpharetta. His name was: Giles F.Mayfield in his 50's.His wife's name was Christina. He died on Dec 31, 1863.I have asked and e-mailed everyone and every place I can think of. I know they didn't keep very good records during war time. If you know of someplace I haven't looked yet please suggest it. I have tried the Atlanta Archieves and corresponded with the head of archieves, they have nothing. Rome has nothing!Their geneology solciety has nothing!.You are my last hope. Thank you for reading my e-mail. Colleen Sudduth [email protected]
