I just received the probate records for William Swan Wells "W.S." and it indicated that all the land he owned was in Acworth (including plots with 130 acres, some with houses) except for one plot in Cherokee County. Since the 'family tale' is that he was murdered by released POW at the end of the Civil War, I am assuming he would have been buried close. He was supposed to be working on the barn when he was killed. I am not positive, but his son Charles was also died in 1865 ... so he may have been with him. I need help checking out cemeteries in the Acworth area that were active in 1865. I saw the cemetery books on the Cobb Co. Genealogical Society but they do not indicate where the cemeteries are located ... and the page I looked at did not even mention Acworth. I lived near Sprayberry High School in 1970s and early 1980s ... worked for GA Power and graduated from GA State Univ. If I had only known this then ... :o) Never fails. Is there anyone who would take pity on me and help me find a tombstone transcriptions? Bonita Hillmer Phoenix AZ \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ----oOOo-(_)-oOOo---- Just Looking ... Bonita, There are several old cemeteries in Acworth, but the most prominent one is probably Liberty Hill. I checked the Cobb Cemeteries books, but don't find your Wells family listed anywhere in Cobb. Doesn't mean they aren't buried in one of the Acworth or nearby cemeteries, but simply that they don't have markers. Here are some other Wells burials. Not yours, necessarily, but may connect later on. From Temple's First Hundred Years: Willeo Cemetery, (on Middle Roswell Road, not Acworth, in 1935 when the book was first published): Walter Wells - Mar 3, 1874 - July 16, 1875 W. Wells - no dates Mt. Beulah Cemetery (also not Acworth) Mary H., wife of TA Wells - May 28, 1853 - July 23, 1886 Oscar, son of JH and MA Wells - August 1 - September 18, 1875 William W. Wells - January 18, 1822 - April 11, 1889 Mary M., wife of William W. Wells - June 25, 1830 - April 5, 1896 Concord Baptist Cemetery (near Smyrna, not near Acworth) Arrena May, dau of JH and MA Wells - July 21 - September 7, 1878 I have several volumes of Cobb County death notices, but right offhand I can't recall if they begin as early as 1865 (I doubt it). When I have a minute, I will check, and if I find anything about the Acworth Wells families, I will be happy to pass it along.
