The bride has many accomplishments and is the possessor of those talents which are needed to make a good wife. The groom is one of Mars Hill's most prosperous young farmers and an excellent gentlemen. The marriage of Miss Ella Smith of this city to Mr Ed. Williams of Marietta was solemnized on last Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at her mother's beautiful home by Rev A J Morgan. The bride is a charming and attractive young lady and a great favorite among the young people of Acworth. The groom is one of Marietta's most progressive business men and popular in society. We congratulate both couples and hope that they may live long lives and that their sky may be darkened by just enough clouds to cause them to enjoy the sunshine. DUE WEST Misses Eliza Dickson and Dora Green and Mr Willie Orr are on a visit to relatives in Clayton County. Misses Mattie Adair and brother, Calvin, have returned from a two week's visit to relatives in Fayette County. Cicero and James Meeks have gone to Etowah County, Ala., for the holidsys. FROM A TOWNSHIP NOT LISTED ON COPY Mr Walter Tolleson and Mr Newton of Atlanta visited Mr A O Tolleson last Sunday. We have a good Sunday School at Noonday. Miss Lizzie York visited friends at Holly Springs last week. Miss Esther Mason of Holly Springs visited her many friends here last week. Miss Sallie Reed is visiting relatives and friends in Acworth. - Rex FROM ANOTHER TOWNSHIP NOT LISTED ON COPY Mrs Joe Grizzard, who has been very sick for several weeks past, is reported slowly improving. We learn that our genial friend and neighbor, Mr G M Barker, will soon move his family to Worth County, Ga. Mr Eddie Baswell, who has been absent for several months visiting friends and relatives in Kansas City, has returned home again. Eddie is a great "Guy" and I am told that he is casting "sheep eyes" at several of his old flames already. Ring off, me boy! Ring off! The many friends of Miss Coral Reed will regret to learn that she is quite ill at this writing. Rev Mr Hanson, newly appointed pastor for the Methodist churches of Smyrna circuit, preached his first sermon to his charge at this place last Sunday night. Rev C T A Pise of Marietta conducted the evening prayer service of the Episcopal church Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian house of worship. A large congregation was present, to many of whom the service was new and strange. The many acquaintances of Mrs Dr John Nelms will be pained to learn that she has been very sick and is but little improved at this time. Mr Frank Neufville and mother, of Vinings, attended religious services in Smyrna last Sunday afternoon. - Critic File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/cobb/newspapers/dec17189826gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.5 Kb

    3. Nope, was named after Acworth, New Hampshire. Sincerely, Lena A Little History Behind Our Town Acworth is located in the Peach State. Acworth, Georgia the "Lake City" rests in the soft green foothills of the north Georgia Mountains, on the gleaming Southeastern white sand banks of Lake Acworth. The Cherokee Nation dotted the Landscape with settlements and enjoyed rich hunting grounds until the early 1830's. The unsuccessful Gold Rush in the 1820's and 1830's lured white settlers in increasing numbers. This provoked conflicts with the local tribes. In 1831 Georgia organized Cherokee County and in 1832 divided it into 10 counties. The lands were sold in the land lottery of 1832. After many failed treaties and much conflict, the Federal Government relocated more than 17,000 Cherokees to Oklahoma from 1838 to 1839 by way of the infamous "Trail of Tears." The State-owned Western and Atlantic Railroad began operation in 1845 in what is now Atlanta and reached Chattanooga by 1851. Water was the lifeblood of the railroad and Nothcutt Station was the first northbound water stop on the new railroad. Insired by its majestic beauty, Joseph Gregg (a W&A Railroad Engineer) renamed Northcutt and called it Acworth after his hometown of Acworth, New Hampshire. The name stuck and Acworth prospered as a busy trade center that combined restful fun with the excitement of commerce. In December of 1860 all of the land in a half-mile radius of The Northcutt Station was incorporated as the thriving City of Acworth, Ga. The war first reached home during April 1862 when Andrew's Raiders stole the famous engine, "The General," in nearby Big Shanty and "The Great Locomotive Chase" raced through Acworth. This unique event has been chronicled in newspapers, magazines, books and two major movies. Sherman was headquartered in Acworth for several days. Following the battles before and after Kennesaw Mountain, many local homes and churches became hospitals. Acworth was spared the torch until November 1864; many were burned. Acworth rose from the flames of the Reconstruction and began to flourish. Again in 1903, the Georgia General Assembly re-incorporated Acworth as a City. In 1950 Lake Allatoona was completed and it, along with Lake Acworth, has given rise to many recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors. Today, Acworth is the center of a thriving, vibrant community and as the "Lake City" has a quality of life seldom available in the world today. Acworth offers that unique combination of a hometown community with a progressive outlook: looking forward to the challenges presented by new growth, yet proud to preserve the history of its orgin. 3. I don't think we had any Acworths living in the area at the time Cobb County was first settled. It is said that the conductor told Mr Armstrong that he couldn't stop the train at Alatoona. After the train passed that place, Mr Armstrong jumped off at Bartow, two miles beyond. He struck a barbed wire fence and fell a distance of 140 feet, so it is said, down an embankment. He was knocked unconscious and remained there all night and was found next morning by Mr McCoy. Mr Armstrong was badly hurt about the face and body and is now in a precarious condition at his father's home in Acworth, attended by Dr W C Humphries. UPSHAW There was a very good attendance at the singing Sunday evening. Born unto Mr and Mrs B V Hopkins, a fine son. Rev Thomas R Morgan left Friday morning to attend the preachers institute at Cumming, Ga. Mrs Maggie Robinson of Waterman spent several days with relatives and friends at this place last week. Born unto Mr and Mrs Early A Kemp, a fine daughter. Mrs W P Clay visited her sister, Mrs F W Rakestraw, near Hiram, Ga., last week. NICKAJACK The weather, at this writing, is holding all business in abeyance. If the mud that is now being worked in the roads could be utilized into brick, building material would be cheap. There is more improvement going on in this community than for a number of years, old houses have received new roofs and new additions are being attached to them. There are also several new houses in progress. Col. W S Cheney is having a confortable tenant house erected on his property near Concord, while Mr F M Reed and Fred Kalb have homes in course of construction. Young man, follow suit, get married, settle down, start an emigration society and grow up with the country. John Ratt finished gathering corn last week, and cotton is still being picked on the Dr Gober farm. Perhaps it is more owing to the weather than to the extent of the crop, why those gentlemen are late. Miss Agnes Kendley's school began under more than usual favorable auspices, but the blizzards and rainstorms of late has compelled some irregular attendance. She has proven herself an excellent teacher of the "young idea," and patrons should remember that there is only five months of public schools this year, and send in their children with as little delay as possible. Mr Charley Stanback, after a respite of several months, on account of his health, is again, we are pleased to note, back at his post as night operator at Nickajack. -Idler File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/cobb/newspapers/countyne811gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb

The writer was shown a lump of gold taken from a mine near Acworth which weighed ninety penny weights. Several parties have visited this section lately looking after gold developments. No doubt if worked properly the mines here would prove profitable. The new Mayor and Council were inducted into office on last Friday night. H M Putnam was elected clerk, and J J Prather, marshall. Miss Nola Barrett is teaching school at Alatoona, Miss Sallie Abbott at Hickory Grove, Miss Sallie Moore at Cowan's school house, George M Moore at Mars Hill, Miss Julia Strickland at Westbrook's school house, and Miss Willie McDowell at Alatoona church. If the people do not get their children educated, it will not be for the want of schools to send them to. The Acworth High School re-opened on the 14th with bright prospects with 75 pupils in attendance. Our people seem to be well pleased with Prof J G Camp as principal and Miss Katie Huffaker as assistant. -Idler File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/cobb/newspapers/countyne810gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.0 Kb

    3. Where did the 1842 marriage ceremony take place? If they married in Cobb, you probably won't find a surviving marriage record, as our early ones were lost during the war. There's a Rev. Isaac Waddell buried in the Citizens' Cemetery in Marietta, but that one was born ca 1849, the son of Isaac Watts Waddell and Sarah Rebecca Daniels. His father may be the one who performed the marriage ceremony in 1842, but I have no idea as to his father's church affiliation, if any. As for the parents of Marcus and Mary Jane, it appears that an older Susan Whitba, age 65, born in NC, was enumerated in the household of Marcus and Mary Heath in 1850. I would suspect that she was Mary Jane's mother. Also in the household is listed an Eliza Ansley Whitba, age 32, born TN, who may be either a sister or sister in law of Mary Jane. The 1840 Cobb County, Georgia, census (Marietta District) shows: Susan Whitby - 1 free white male aged 5-10, 1 aged 15-20, 2 aged 30-40 - 3 free white females aged 20-30, 1 aged 30-40, 1 aged 50-60. I don't find a Heath family enumerated in 1840 Cobb who is a possibility for the parents of Marcus. Sorry. Sorry not to be of more help. Hopefully someone else on the list will be able to offer more.
