Due to computer problems I have lost all addresses for those who I have previously corresponded regarding our common families in Cobb Co, GA. If you have unanswered mail to me I will need you to re-send your request as saved messages are also gone. I recently visited the Mayes Family Cemetery (near Sprayberry High School) in Cobb Co and located a large group of Hamby's there that I cannot associate with my files and need to re-establish contact with a MAYES family researcher for assistance. Several of the children and grandchildren of David C. Hamby (1815-1860) and Olive Daniell (1815-1859) married members of the Mayes family of Cobb. This particular Mayes group is also affiliated with Gable, Gober, Dobbs of Cobb Co and are descendants of William James Mayes (1797-1862) and Elizabeth Thomas (1793-1871). Thanks for the info, does anyone have access to a map that I might purchase for that time period? Sue K

Deborah, I looked in the Cobb County, Georgia Marriage Index published by the Cobb County, Georgia, Genealogical Society, Inc. and could find no reference to this couple. I have a mystery: Manning Austin DAY married Sarah Elizabeth MCCLURE, at least I THINK it was MCCLURE. In the Family bible it says they were married Jan.17, 1860 in Woodstock, Cherokee County. Sarah was from Acworth, and Manning Austin from Cherokee County. Researchers doing look-ups for me in Cherokee county have found NO marriage record for Manning Austin, yet they are both on the 1860 census together in Cherokee County. While their first son, Jack, was born Dec.6, 1860 in Acworth. BTW- Jack died in 1868, so he is not on any 1870 census. I can't even find Manning Austin on the 1870!!!! Anyway, if they got married in Jan.1860, the census data and birthdate fit. Could they have been married in Acworth, Cobb County? Someone told me that marriage licenses were often in the bride's county. Could someone check records there for me please? I am in North Carolina. (We have red clay here, too!) Thanks very much for any help you can offer! Sincerely, Deborah Day Olsen

White settlement was prohibited by Federal Law although there were a few traders, missionaries (mostly Moravian), etc. The boundry line generally followed the Chattahoochie River. Everything northward was a part of the Cherokee Nation. Most white settlement did not begin until after the removal of the Cherokee.
