    3. Linda Murray, I'm surprised that you haven't found anything on your CHASTAIN families. CHASTAIN is a popular name in your area. There is Chastain Park, and a Chastain exit off of Interstate 75 which Kennesaw State University is on. Since you live in Marrietta, can't you find anything in the library there? I use to live in Cobb Co. and use to go to the library often. I now live out in the country in Heard Co. and I've since become disabled or I'd go to that library(Georgia Room). Good Luck, I'm pulling for you! Betty Stinecipher

    3. The First Hundred Years, A Short History of Cobb County - Temple, 1935 - gives a listing of County Officers on page 567. The list of Sheriffs for the period Mar 20, 1833 through 1934, includes two terms of service for my ggg-gf. Joseph Chastain, and one for an AA Baldwin. No dates for his term are given, but the sheriff who followed him, WP Stephens, served five terms from 1871, so I would assume that AA served immediately prior to 1871. I wish you better luck in finding a wealth of information on this Baldwin Sheriff than I have had on my Chastain. I have accumulated the entire collection of Cobb County newspapers from inception to 1920, and though I seem to recall mentions from time to time, have made no notes for this AA Baldwin nor for your Hartwell. The Collins Springs Cemetery is located on Collins Springs Road off Atlanta Road in Smyrna.. Baldwins buried there are: From: Cobb County, Georgia, Cemeteries, Vol. I, 1984 22070 Baldwin, Mary E. 3. Hello everyone, I'm a brand new subscriber. I'm looking for Baldwins in Cobb County. Specifically Hartwell Baldwin, who was born ca. 1835 in Smyrna, was a first sergeant in the Ga. Militia ("Joe Brown's Pets"). After the war he was Sheriff of Cobb County, apparently for quite some time. He had several children, among whom was Alfred P. Baldwin, my great grandfather. I am looking for any info you all might have about Hartwell. There should be quite a bit since he was Sheriff... I'm also looking for the Collins Springs Primitive Church, which was in Smyrna. A number of my Baldwins are buried there. Does this church still exist? Where is the cemetery? Help? Anybody? Harry Baldwin [email protected]

    3. Does anyone have any information on Vanns of Cobb County for the late 1700s through at least the 1840s, I'm looking for a couple of links: (1) the parents of Burrell T. Vann, 04/1824 - 08/1902 (2) any information on a Burl Vann who lived in Cobb County from the mid 1700s to at least 1830. Burrell T. , from what I can find, was the son of a brother of Burl. This Burl could also be construed as also being Burrell for whom Burrell T. Vann was named. I have some additional information for any one who may have a lead on these ancestors. Thanks, Jack.

    3. Only Union soldiers are buried in the Marietta National Cemetery. The men buried there died in all the battles of the Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War up to and including the Desert Storm war. There is a separate cemetery in Marietta for Confederate dead. It is not maintained with the same devotion as the other. I'm not even sure who funds its' upkeep. Jonathan A. 3. Does anyone have any information on the unit my gggrandfather served with- Ferrell's Battery was part of the 14th Georgia Artillery- I wonder why it is not listed on this website? His name was William Henry Dean and he was, according to his military records, a sergeant in this unit.I believe he grew up in Cobb Co and moved to Texas after the Civil War in 1867. He was an early pioneer of Bowie Co/Texarkana . His last request was to be buried wrapped in the confederate flag he carried in battle. Bowie Co website lists his obituary. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/bowie/bowitoc.htm Should I send his military pension file to the Gen/Society? Thanks so much, Kay Bradley

    3. Hi, Jon. Just for experiment purposes, try keying into the search engine the YEAR only. From 1940 through 1952 there are only entries in the twenties, (as in 20 to 30 entries) Before and after that period of time, keying in the year brings up results which number in the thousands - a vast difference, which tells me that many thousands of death entries are missing for the years 1940-52 - unless the state as a whole had an extremely healthy twelve-year period. :)) Also, I agree re keying in county. Because of the major hospitals lying in Fulton County, it's always a good idea to check Fulton, just in case using home county doesn't work. Also, if you think your ancestor was a veteran, try Dekalb, in case they died in the VA hospital - in Decatur, I believe. 3. I have found that there are many, many of my names missing from this database. And it is not just the 1940's. It seems to be scattered throughout up to the 1950's. However, you must be careful to search using the proper search arguments. You may have thought that a person died is a particular county when, in fact, they died in another county (probably in a hospital). I saw people with a south GA residence who died in Fulton County.
