Mrs. Branch came to Buena Vista the first of the year with her husband, Rev. C.H. Branch, who is pastor of the Methodist church. Soon afterward she suffered from an attack of the measles, and it was a relapse of this disease that caused her death. She bore her sufferings long and patiently, until death came Tuesday morning and bore her spirit to a brighter and better world. When first she came to Buena Vista she was almost unknown, but her gentle, womanly modesty made for her a friend of all whom she met, for to know her was to love her. Her mother had been telegraphed for and attended her bedside in her last illness, and surrounded by a loving mother, a devoted husband and four friends, her spirit broke loose from its moorings of clay and returned to the God who gave it. Her remains were taken to Winterville Wednesday morning for interment, a large concourse of friends accompanying them to the depot. To the grief stricken husband we would say, cheer up, she waits for you in heaven. The Marion County Patriot, No. 23 June 7, 1889 Page Three Personals Rev. J.O. Branch came over from Americus Tuesday and left with the remains of Mrs. C.H. Branch for Marietta, Wednesday morning. 3. Anna, I would love to, but don't know how I can help with your Dougherty in Cobb County prior to the war. Unfortunately, all our early court records were burned during Sherman's march to Atlanta, and the few earlier sources I have offer very little. The 1850 census shows James' occupation as mason instead of tanner, if that helps. Also, he is shown in both 1840 and 1850 and on Rhoda's grave marker as James G. instead of C. In 1840 he is shown in the 848 Militia District with either another set of children or (more likely) brothers and sisters since Rhoda Ann would have been only about 18-25 in 1840. 1840 Cobb County, Georgia - 848 GMD Jas. G. Dougherty - 100111 - 12101 (1 free white male under age 5, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male (James) 30-40 - 1 free white female under age 5, 2 females aged 5-10, 1 female aged 10-15, 1 female (Rhoda?) aged 20-30. Georgia didn't begin to keep death records until about 1919, so no help there. I have published death notices from early Cobb County newspapers up to about 1888, but the earliest newspapers for Marietta which survived long enough to get filmed begin with 1868, and, of course, he's not listed in those. Sorry I wasn't able to be of more help, but I do wish you luck. Hopefully someone else on the list will be able to offer more. James Daugherty has a monument in the Maloney Springs Church cemetery but there is no inscription on it. It was placed there by family. I have been to that cemetery and to the Kennesaw Cemetery where Grandma Daugherty is buried. I think that he was a tanner in Marietta but don't know for sure. I have a lot on Grandma Daugherty but nothing on him except for some dates. Don't know when he died. Just says before 1860. Thanks for any help. Anna

    3. Hi, Anna. I am fairly sure your reference to James Daugherty in the 1830 census was intended to be 1850, if you meant to say that he was enumerated in the census for Cobb County. Cobb wasn't formed prior to the 1830 census. I do find this family in 1850 Cobb and in 1870 Fulton. Rhoda Ann is buried in the Kennesaw Cemetery with daughter, Sarah's, Pyron family, but I don't find a cemetery inscription in Cobb County for James. If you could please tell me what you already have, (so as not to waste time duplicating your research) - and what sort of help you need, I will be happy to check to see what I have. 1. Re: [GACOBB] 1850 COBB CO CENSUS LOOKUP REQUEST
    2. Linda Murray
    3. 1850 Cobb County, Georgia - Marietta District - October 1, 1850 - page125 492 - William Jones, age 23; farmer; $400; born SC Nancy, age 65; born SC Zachry Tailor, age 10; born GA It's a good theory, but there are no Taylors living near this Jones family, and in fact, no Taylors in this local town district at all. There are also, unfortunately, no Taylor families indexed in 1850 Cobb County who indicate that they were born in South Carolina. By the time of the 1860 census, there were several Taylors in Cobb who are shown as born in SC, but none of those appear to be the same as the Taylors in Cobb in 1850. There was one Taylor family indexed in 1840 Cobb: 1840 Cobb County, Georgia - District 846 - page 259 Fred. Taylor - 120001 - 20001 Joneses indexed in 1840 Cobb were Timothy Jones, District 897, page 248 and Hartwell Jones, District 911, page 244 Again, not enumerated in the same area as Frederick Taylor. I found Zachary indexed in 1870 Dade County, but have not been able to find him in the 1860 census. Without my having to look up his service record, can you tell me where he was living at the time of his enlistment? If you already have the census information from his 1860 enumeration, please disregard that question. 1870 Dade County, Gerogia - Militia District 974 - Trenton - June 30, 1870 - page 495 271 - Taylor, Zechariah, age 27, farm labor; born GA Nancy, age 26; keeping house; born GA I would suggest checking Cobb County probate records to find a reason for Zachary to be in the apparent guardianship of Nancy Jones, but we lost those early records during the recent ugly war. Sorry I can't be of more help.
