I am most interested in a Taylor family that lived in the Athens, Georgia area during the Civil War era, and possibly its descendants still live there today. I cannot be sure that the area where they lived is in present-day Clarke County, but this is probably the best place to start. The head of household was John Henry Taylor, who migrated into the area prior to the Civil War from most likely Massachusetts or Maine, which is where he landed in America when he emigrated from Ireland. Old family hearsay is that John Henry Taylor left his farm near Athens with his gun and knapsack to join the Confederate Army as a civilian volunteer when Sherman's Federal Troops were approaching Atlanta. John Henry Taylor was never seen again, and it must be assumed that he was one of the thousands who lost their life in the Battle of Atlanta and were buried in unmarked graves. Old family hearsay is that John Henry Taylor's family consisted of his wife (possibly named Francis), son James Taylor, daughter (possibly named Elizabeth) and a younger son John Murphy Taylor who was born in June of 1856. Old family hearsay is that the youngest son John Murphy Taylor left the farm a few years after the Civil War ended (circa 1870) because of economic conditions. What happened in John Murphy Taylor's life for the period of approximately 27 years from when he supposedly left the family farm near Athens until his marriage to Mina Chambers in 1897 in Quincy, Gadsden County, Florida is unknown. John Murphy Taylor remained married to Mina until his death in 1942. Do you have any knowledge, suggestions or opinions on how to identify this John Henry Taylor family and/or its descendants? Thank you reading my query. Jim Webb - Taylor Genealogist - Jacksonville, Fla.
