    1. [GACLARKE] Mars Hill Baptist Church
    2. Hi List, Sorry I am posting so much, but this time I decided to copy and paste what was on the website since I am having difficulty with the links. This was posted to the Stroud surname GenForum in May 1999. Mark & Martha Strother Thompson Stroud were founding members of the Mars Hill Baptist Church near Athens, Georgia & are buried there. The church is celebrating its 200th anniversary on Memorial Day weekend. See the website for details: http//negia.com/~mhbc/bicentennial.html To honor this event, a history of the church has been written - see below for details: Announcing the 200th anniversary LIMITED EDITION HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE OF MARS HILL BAPTIST CHURCH & COMMUNITY 1799-1999 by Amy Warren Sanders Available June 1, 1999 Representing more than five years of intensive research, this volume gives an in-depth look at not only the history of this early church, but the people of the surrounding community as well, for the period of about 1799 through 1900. It contains nearly 500 pages of surviving church minutes, the complete survey of the church cemetery (up-to-date as of May 1, 1999), extensive family lineages, other source material, pictures, maps and a full-name index. The community was formed by the families who made up the early members of Mars Hill Baptist Church which organized on June 1, 1799 in what was at that time Jackson County, Georgia. This same church is now located within the boundaries of Oconee County, but had been previously in Clarke County from 1800 until 1875 when Oconee was formed from the southern portion of Clarke County. A 200th anniversary celebration will take place at the church over Memorial Day weekend, 1999. Read more about the Bicentennial on the Mars Hill Baptist Church website at http//negia.com/~mhbc/bicentennial.html . The families living in this community had previously been found in these Georgia counties: Jackson, Clarke, Wilkes, Oglethorpe, Greene, Elbert, Madison, Walton, and Morgan. Some descendants remained in Georgia (and are still members of this church today); others moved westward into Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Today the founding families of Mars Hill Baptist Church have descendants all over the United States. Included in this volume are the first two Church Minute Books transcriptions, the earliest existing membership list (1936), the Daniell Ledger and the Bradberry Almanac (two manuscripts recording deaths in the Mars Hill Community), census records, estate records, cemetery records, Bible records, marriage records, and other records. Copies are $50 each post paid (GA residents add 7% sales tax). Only 500 copies of this limited edition were printed!
