Says that the first railroad to be chartered in Ga. was the Georgia Railroad in 1832. It was a venture undertaken by Athens citizens, and it went from Augusta (Richmond Co.) to Eatonton (Putnam Co.). It was later extended to Athens, and finally west of the Chatahoochee. Source:This is Your Georgia, by Bernice McCullar, edited and revised by Stanley Chambers, formerly executive Editor, Readers Digest Special Projects., printed by Viewpoint Publications, Montgomery, Ala. ISBN 0-932659-00-4; 1982 Copyright. Source Page 120, "First In Railroads". THIS IS YOUR GEORGIA, by Bernice McCullar, Viewpoint Publications, Montgomery, Ala. Copyrighted in 1972, LOC Card No. 72-8428, page 354 carries the same basic information regarding the first railroad charter, it's inception by Athens (Clarke Co.) citizens, name of railroad and it's route (Augusta-to- Eatonton, later to Athens and to west of the Chatahoochee, except the older version carries the name of one of the citizens, it's president, James Camak. Hope this helps.
