Jo, I think the cemetery she was talking about is Oconee Hill Cemetery which is the successor of the Old Athens Cemetery next to the Fine Arts bldg on Jackson St., just east of the main UGA library. The surveys of the cemetery on Jackson St. were republished in the Clarke County Cemeteries book put out by the Athens Historical Society last year (1999). They are currently working on re-surveying Oconee Hill Cemetery. If you'd like to become a member of AHS, it's only $10 per year - send check to Athens Historical Society, P.O. Box 7745, Athens, GA 30604-7745 & you'll get a quarterly newsletter & notices of publication of the OHC book, in addition to more info on the Bicentennial of Athens exhibit at the Georgia Museum of Art Jan-March 2001! Anyone with memorabilia from the early years of Athens or items made by Athens craftspeople that would be interested in displaying these items, contact the AHS exhibit coordinator Mary Bondurant Warren at [email protected] or call her at (706) 549-1264.
