The tiny Community of Watkinsville, Georgia in Oconee County, was a center of commerce, discourse, and political activity. In Watkinsville, Farmington, and other small towns, both in Georgia, and throughout the South, the "Church" was the center for many activities, both social and religious. It also served as a place for further discourse. The simple "art of talking with each other" was an important part of Southern Culture during the 1800s. Antioch Christian Church was a very active church in which many activities took place. The Willoughby Family, along with many of the other families associated with them, were active members of this church. Many of them are buried in the Antioch Church Cemetery. Willoughby, Pridgen, Hardigree, Elder, Durham, and Saxon Families were active in both the social, religious, and political life of their Community. All of these families were landowners. During the early 1800s, landowners were looked upon as social and political leaders of their communities. The land adjacent to where Antioch Christian Church is now located was owned by the Willoughby Family. William WILLOUGHBYS son, as directed by his fathers will, retained the family plantation, but sold a small part of the family land to church members to build the present day church.
