    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yc.2ADE/820.2.1 Message Board Post: Thank you Bill! Believe it or not someone sent me what I was looking for! I am trying to find the name of the person who was so kind. E-mail has been heavy the past few days and am beside myself trying to keep up with it all. I do have another person who contacted me this evening, asking for a look-up in same cemetery. May I e-mail them privately and perhaps you could help them out? I really appreciate all of this!! Thought I might be the only person around looking for more Winterville info. Yes, my two Ivester burials were certainly found there in the cemetery. I shared the info with all of my Ivester/Gable/Gabrel/Gabriel cousins and researchers! How great it is to have friendly researchers, such as yourself. Judy

    3. In the limited genealogy that I have done, I have been disappointed to learn that funeral homes usually are a poor source of information. The offer still stands. Yes, the Winterville City Cemetery is listed on pages 160 through 198. I would be happy to do your look-up. Please advise. 3. The Clarke County Cemetery book is still available from AHS - it's $30 plus $3 shipping from Athens Historical Society, P.O. Box 7745, Athens, GA 30604-7745. This book has the OLD City Cemetery (AKA Jackson Street Cemetery), but not Oconee Hill or the modern memorial parks in Clarke Co. The transcriptions were done in 1994 with verification in 1998, published spring 1999. Hope this helps! eve ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jvmason@aol.com> To: <GACLARKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 26, 2002 5:52 PM Subject: [GaClarke] Re: Winterville City Cemetery > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yc.2ADE/820.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Zach, e-mail me at Jvmason@aol.com. 2. After E-mailing you just discovered Mutual Funeral Home is now the Winfrey Mutual Funeral Home. There was the Houston Lumpkin Funeral Home that was established in 1912 that was later purchased by either the Hurley or Winfery Funeral Home some twenty or thirty years ago. If I am not mistaken it was the Hurley Funeral Home. However, some of those early death records were not passed on with the purchase of the business. Deanna

    2. All of the Black funeral homes in Athens except the latest, Grandview , have roots back to the Twenty,s either in business of family relationships most of them grew out of the same organizations one of the older ones is Mack&Payne.

    3. Deanne - The only black funeral home that I am sure was operating in Athens in the 1920s is Mack & Payne. They were on Washington St. for many years (75?) but a few years ago they moved to 625 Nellie B Avenue, Athens, 30601, phone number 706-543-8213. Good luck, Gary Doster Rromain806@cs.com wrote: > Last year I made contact with some Neely's in Athens, Georgia, who also had > relatives who resided in Ohio & Michigan. 2. Last year I made contact with some Neely's in Athens, Georgia, who also had relatives who resided in Ohio & Michigan. I am not sure if the person I spoke with in Athens was name John or the one from Ohio. They knew very little about their ancesters with the exception that they had an uncle by the name of Peter Neely. There was a family reunion held in Dearborn, Michigan, I went to see if we were related but nobody was sure. I had obtained a narrative from the Macon, Georgia Library that was provided by a lady name Maria Jackson in 1939 who resided in Athens. This ladies parents were Neely's. The Gentleman I spoke with in Athens told me that she was either his aunt or great aunt. The reason I am unable to be precise is because I have that information packed away. These Neely's had roots in Winterville as well as another Neely family I found here in Detroit. Neither of the Neely families had researched in depth. I am trying to determine if a Peter Neely who resided on Fourth Street in Athens in the 1920's is my great great uncle. Can you tell me what the name or names of the Black Funeral Homes in Athens in the 1920's? Thank You! Deanna
