    1. Re: [GaClarke] Confederate camps
    2. Found the following two camps for Clarke County, GA in an excellent 1995 book: Camp Fires of Georgia's Troops, 1861-1865 by William S. Smedlund: p. 121 Camp Fairground, "located on the north side of the ridge of the fairgrounds near Athens. Georgia Troops: 30th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, Co. A, 8/7/1864-9/15/1864 (The company returned to this camp for a few days about October 26, 1864. Sources: ASB, 8/17/1864 & 10/26/1864." ASB is Athens Southern Banner newspaper, Athens, GA p. 266 Camp Taylor, "located near Thibodaux. Georgia Troops: Athens Reserve Corps, Georgia Infantry (Light Duty), 9/30/1862. Source: GDAH, CSR, 258/52" The book offers three separate indexes allowing you to look up individual proper names, by unit in chronological order, and by State and county. 2. Anything at all on Calvin and his wives, espcially where they are buried. I have found where James Robert is buried, but that's as far back as I can get. Also, pictures would be awesome. I know there is probably not much in the way of pictures, since Calvin's time was the late 1800's, but I am hoping to find something. Calvin's father was James M (I have no idea what the M is for). He was in Clarke Co in 1836 when he married Elizabeth Gill and on the census he said he came from Virginia, but there were so many James in Virginia that I can't pinpoint which one is him. Thanks so much! Bonita Eberhart

    3. Deanna - Sounds like you are finding some great information; congratulations. It is really satisfying when new information comes to light after a lot of "digging." Good luck on the rest of your seach. My trip to Alaska was great, althought the fishing was not as good as last year but we did catch quite a few salmon and some halibut.. I was with good friends, however, and consequently it was much fun even if we had not caught as many fish. Best wishes, Gary. 2. Gary, Your assistance was deeply appreciated. I did send off for a copy of Peter Neely's Death Certificate hopefully it will identify his place of birth & parents. While researching information on my Neely ancesters from Washington County I read that many of the earlier settlers in that County were from North Carolina. Reviewed some documents on an early settler Thomas Neely who entered the area in 1825 from South Carolina, but also had a connection in Jefferson County. Jefferson County may very well be the key. Because I have traced my Wigg & Swan ancesters from Emanuel County to Louisville in Jefferson County. Documentation indicates my great great grandfather Charles Wiggs was born between 1784 & 1791 in Beaufort, South Carolina and entered Jefferson County in 1814. The last record of him in Jefferson County is 1844 then in Emanuel County 1850-1870. My great great great grandfather Henry Swan was born in Marylands E. Shore and entered Jefferson County in 1794. So I may very well find the Neely's there as well. But those Neely's wherever you find them are a very private group of people. (smiles) Was glad to hear about your trip. What was the catch of the day? Were you able to get some good Salmon? One thing for sure you had to be in a very peaceful environment. Gary, again I thank you! Deanna

    1. Re: [GaClarke] Search
    2. Actually it's been my experience that if you ask for a search in a small range of dates they will do it. In addition you should write the land office and ask for a search of land grantors and grantees around that date for his Surname, as frequently land would be sold shortly after death in order to divide the proceeds among the heirs. The land sale would most likely name all the heirs. 3. Sorry to disappoint you, David, but many of the graves that early had only fieldstone markers (only the more wealthy could afford for marble stones to be shipped upriver to Athens). The old city cemetery which has been encroached upon by the University of Georgia over the past 75 years had many more graves than the 1964 transcription published in the cemetery book. Also most people were buried on their family farms & marked only with fieldstone, because everybody in the family knew who was buried where!
