Joyce what info do you have on the North Family. My 3rd-grandfather was Thomas North and Penelope Jennings Epps. William nd Sarah Alexander Epps, Thomas North Epps, Early Oscar Epps, Oscar Earl Epps, Wm. Jessie Earl Epps Sr., and me. Do you have much information on the North side of the family. The North in Thomas name has us confused. Thanks for any assistance. Connie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce E. Joan, in checking the original text of the Oconee Hill Cemetery transcripts done in 1994, I didn't find extant markers for any of the people you mentioned. Here's what I did find: In the NEW section G: Section G, Lot 49 Johnson, Andrew A. 1879 - 1951 Johnson, Lena Rumsey 5 Mar 1883 - 13 Jan 1940 Harper, Raymond Glenn 1904 - 1979 [Note: Raymond & Lucy's graves have individual markers over a common slab with Harper inscribed on it.] Harper, Lucy Johnson 1908 - [no date] Section G Lot 50 Stephens, Henry D. 1 Nov 1878 - 3 Jan 1941 Stephens, Alice Pittman 12 Oct 1882 - 29 Jun 1958 Phipps, Carl L. 1906 - [no date] Phipps, Wrethie S. 1901 - [no date] Stephens, Charlie Clarine 3 Jul 1907 - 14 Oct 1980, PFC, U.S. Army, WWII [VA marker] >From the OLD Section: Valley Section, Lot 44 Huggins?, H.H. [ROI: initials H.H.H. only] Huggins, James Howard 22 Aug 1828 Franklin, NC - 1 Mar 1900 Lula, GA, Father [joint marker with Mary below] Huggins, Mary Jones 19 May 1824 Asheville, NC - 29 Mar 1900 Athens, GA, Mother Huggins, Thomas D. 30 May 1867 - 28 Jan 1892 Huggins, James H., Jr. 6 Nov 1861 - 24 Aug 1942 Huggins, Lena Lois 1902 - 1905 Stephens, Linton W. 1847 - 1880 [joint marker with Frances below] Hodges, Frances Huggins Stephens 1850 - 1935 P.E. Babies I know these are much later than you're searching for, but as someone else has mentioned, earlier grave markers are fairly scarce in this area. Many graves were marked only with fieldstone, thus information on the deceased has been lost over the centuries. Joan: FYI - Oconee Hill Cemetery was purchased in 1855 by the City of Athens when further burials were prohibited in the old town cemetery on land owned by The University of Georgia. Therefore, the first burials there wouldn't have taken place until sometime in 1855 or 1856. I have a list of the Stephens, etal., that were buried there. They have all been in the 20th century. If you do find where your David Stephens, Mary Frances "Frankie" HARRIS Stephens, your Harpers, Applewhites, and all are buried, please share with me. I've been searching for the last 9 or 10 years to no avail. I do have different death dates for David and Frances. And it would be very interesting to know where our family tree branches off... I just received a book I ordered from Iberian Press... "These Men She Gave" by John Stegeman. It is the story of the Clarke county men who served in different regiments in the civil war. I live in TX and know little of the county and have just started researching the Bearden and Wilkinson families. There were mentions of some Beardens so that got my interest. The book gives the background of the local politics just before and after secession. In addition there are a number of excellent maps outlining battles these men fought. I would be glad to do a lookup for any names you think may be in it and also would encourage you to see if it is available at your library. bbwhaw@msn.com Barbara Wilkinson
