In the 1994 draft of the Oconee Hill Cemetery re-copying done by members of the Athens Historical Society were found these markers - evidently the stones do NOT give any further information about the Smith children. Note that these were the only markers extant in the lot - if there were more burials in that lot, they have not been confirmed yet (the revision & annotation of the 1971 edition of Oconee Hill's Old Section is in progress). Also if Sarah Evaline Smith went to Baltimore to live, they brought her back to Athens to be buried here. This was not unusual as Athens had good train service at that time. Majorie, While Oconee County was not created until 1875, the name Oconee had been around much earlier in the name of Oconee River. According to The Georgia Almanac by James Crutchfield p. 92, Oconee was the Indian word for "the place of the springs" or "the water eyes of the hills." It might be an interesting project for you to try to see if the Georgians who show up in Illinois might have been associated with the failed attempt to establish the "Trans-Oconee Republic." Following the Revolutionary War, General Elijah Clarke (for whom Clarke County was named) headed up a group of Georgia settlers who decided to cross the Oconee River and set up an independent country in Creek territory. Since this plan violated treaties between the U.S. government and Creek Indians, this became a federal issue, prompting the President to send federal troops to Georgia to suppress this action which quickly collapsed. Might be worth investigating whether any of these Georgia ex-pats might have serv! ed with Elijah Clarke during the Rev. War. If they were involved with him in the Trans-Oconee Republic effort, it could explain why they would take the name Oconee with them to a new home. Ken Daniell > > From: "Eve B. For those who don't have ready access to current newspapers for Athens & Clarke Co., try the Athens Banner Herald website for information! It's free & covers much of the Northeast Georgia area. Go to www.onlineathens.com & use the search feature. They even have newspapers (especially obituaries) archived & available online as far back as 1996! (Yeah, I know, that's modern history!!) Good luck & happy New Year to all, eve

I've worked with the newspapers in the UGA Library (not in the Hargrett Manuscript Collection) in the past & what you're asking for would take many hours to find - search every newspaper in the Bainbridge area from 1887 onward to find an obituary for Jesse Wilder. If he remained in Decatur Co., GA, after he served in the GA House of Representatives, have you found any deed records or estate papers for him? That would be my first place to look for any record of his death. If he left Decatur Co., GA for points unknown, he probably sold his property & the deeds could give you clues there.
