I am seeking info on William J. Lawton, a Union scout who operated out of Chattanooga through North Georgia and who was killed in April of 1864. While I have his reports from the National Archives, I have not been able to determine whether or not he was an enlisted man. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am also seeking info on Hattie Lawton, a Pinkerton operative during the Civil War. I found a WPA article form the late 1930's that contained an interview with someone of that name. She was married to J. M. Lawton. They resided in Rome, Georgia. Again, any info would be of great value. Jane Singer

Hi, I have had a lot of questions and responses about the Jackson County, GA. Cemeteries. One of the main questions is how will this one be different. Here are my plans: 1. Mine will be an updated one (a lot of people have died in the last 20 years). 2. Mine will have pictures of the churches (if no church is there it will a picture of what the cemetery looks like. 3. I will include the church histories, along with founding members. 4. There are some cemeteries that are not in the old book, I am still looking for others. 5. I maybe include pictures of old or unusual stones. 6. I will include all unmarked graves. Any that are unmarked that I can find out who is buried there will be included. 7. Mine will include directions to the cemeteries and maybe maps. The maps in the old book are very hard to follow (I have heard this from others). I do not own this book and have only seen it once several years ago. I am still not sure how I am going to publish it yet. I may have to do it in sections if it gets too big. I am still working on this project, so it will take a while since I am doing this all myself. Thank you to everyone that has sent positive responses and encouragement. I really do appreciate it. Hope this answers your questions. Best Regards, Belinda [email protected]
Hi, I am in the process of transcribing the Jackson County, Georgia Cemeteries for a book I plan on publishing. At the moment I am working on Prospect United Methodist Church, it is located at the Jackson County and Clarke County lines. I am also getting the church histories. Prospect dates back to the 1780's. It is a very neat cemetery. It has some very old and somewhat unique markers, a crypt or tomb, iron fences. I have not finished this cemetery yet. I am also told there in a slave cemetery located in the woods behind the church. I am trying to identify the unmarked graves in this cemetery. There are quite a few. Some are marked with plies of rocks, some with a field stone, a wooded cross, or whatever someone could find. If anyone has any ancestors buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave could you please contact me. I would really like to identify as many unmarked graves in Jackson County as I can. I have found several people who have family buried here in unmarked and they were able to show where in the cemetery their families are buried and what their name were. I would really appreciate information on these unmarked graves. Thank you. Best Regards, Belinda [email protected]
http://www.ultranet.com/~deeds/research.htm This is an interesting site where you can list the waterways, land, etc. where you are doing research and hook up with others who are doing deed work in your areas! Very neat idea! Jeanne
