Hi David 'n Everybody, I'm a little embarrassed, but I forgot to mention WALTON as one of the primary counties. > > The primary counties included in the abstracts were: Clarke, Jackson, > Oglethorpe, Madison, Franklin, Habersham, Hall and Gwinnett. There are 71 references to Walton Co., and 49 references to the Town of Monroe ... so Walton is definitely in the book! Also, there is a "gap" in newspapers between the first volume and Vol. 2. The last issue that was located for the "Athens Gazette" was on Oct. 5, 1820. The next newspaper, according to records at the Univ. of GA, was the "Columbian Centinel" which was in effect in 1825-26. The only issues located for the Centinel were found at The American Antiquarian Soc., Worcester, Massachusetts and are scattered for 1826. "The Athenian" started on Jan. 1, 1827 and Volume 2 goes thru Dec. 29, 1829. I was fortunate enough to find 4 missing issues at The American Antiquarian Soc., which has made this time period complete for "The Athenian". Also included in Vol. 2 was an Addendum to the first volume, as I located two original issues of the "Georgia Express", one in 1808 and one in 1809, at the Washington Memorial Library in Macon, Georgia. Thanks again! Faye Poss

(ATHENS), GA, NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS, 1808-1820 listed on your "Booksellers Page". Well ... I now have the 2nd volume back from the printers and would greatly appreciate if you would add this one also. The book name, description, price, etc., follows below. Thanks very much! Faye S. Poss - ----------------------------- CLARKE CO. (ATHENS), GA, NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS, 1826-1829, Vol. 2. This is a continuation of abstracts for Athens, GA newspapers which includes classified and legal notices, marriage and death notices, lists of letters remaining in the post offices (for Athens, Jefferson, Gainesville and Watkinsville), complete listing of names drawn in the 1827 Land Lottery for Clarke, Jackson, Gwinnett, Habersham and Hall counties, and many other miscellaneous articles with genealogical content. The primary counties included in the abstracts were: Clarke, Jackson, Oglethorpe, Madison, Franklin, Habersham, Hall and Gwinnett. Newspapers were: "Columbian Centinel" with scattered issues in 1826, and "The Athenian" from January 1827 thru December 1829 (all issues were included). There are 3 indexes: 1) Surname Index, 2) Slave Index with names of their owners; and 3) Place/ Subject Index. The book is hardback, 8-1/2 x 11", 391 pages, and is a perfect match for the first volume which covered abstracts from 1808 to 1820. Price - $36.00, plus $4.00 S&H (whether one or more volumes), and GA residents are to add 6% tax. Orders to be forwarded to: Faye Stone Poss, 2767 Centerville Rosebud Road, Snellville, GA 30039.
There are two books out on Clark County Newspaper Abstracts Volume 1 and 2 by Faye Poss. Samuel is in Volume II and shows him in Madison County 1828. You might want to check these books. I am particularly interested in: George SCROGGIN, Revolutionary War Soldier John NALLE m Molly BUGG William NALL, son of John & Molly Humphrey J. Josiah C. Garrett married Susannah Atkinson on Dec. 20, 1825 in Clarke Co., Ga. Josiah Garrett died Sept. 8, 1847 and Susannah died Sept. 28, 1848 in Henry Co., GA (I believe). Their daughter, Martha Sarah Garrett, b. 4 Dec 1830, married Jeptha Pullen on 10 Aug 1876 in Henry Co., GA. My theory is that Martha Garrett Pullen had siblings that were orphaned when her parents died......James Marcellus (family stories say James was born in DeKalb Co.GA), John, William, S.A. (a female) and Elizabeth. There is nothing in Henry Co., GA in the form of will/probate/guardianship. I found these Garrett children living with Augustus Webb in the 1850 census in Randolph Co., GA and later in 1860 census living in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA. My theory is that these Garrett children may be related to Josiah and Susannah Garrett who both died before 1850. Just a theory mind you, no proof yet. Looking for descendants of this couple. Anyone with any information, I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Patty Garrett [email protected]

Hi List, Sorry I am posting so much, but this time I decided to copy and paste what was on the website since I am having difficulty with the links. This was posted to the Stroud surname GenForum in May 1999. Mark & Martha Strother Thompson Stroud were founding members of the Mars Hill Baptist Church near Athens, Georgia & are buried there. The church is celebrating its 200th anniversary on Memorial Day weekend. See the website for details: http//negia.com/~mhbc/bicentennial.html To honor this event, a history of the church has been written - see below for details: Announcing the 200th anniversary LIMITED EDITION HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE OF MARS HILL BAPTIST CHURCH & COMMUNITY 1799-1999 by Amy Warren Sanders Available June 1, 1999 Representing more than five years of intensive research, this volume gives an in-depth look at not only the history of this early church, but the people of the surrounding community as well, for the period of about 1799 through 1900. It contains nearly 500 pages of surviving church minutes, the complete survey of the church cemetery (up-to-date as of May 1, 1999), extensive family lineages, other source material, pictures, maps and a full-name index. The community was formed by the families who made up the early members of Mars Hill Baptist Church which organized on June 1, 1799 in what was at that time Jackson County, Georgia. This same church is now located within the boundaries of Oconee County, but had been previously in Clarke County from 1800 until 1875 when Oconee was formed from the southern portion of Clarke County. A 200th anniversary celebration will take place at the church over Memorial Day weekend, 1999. Read more about the Bicentennial on the Mars Hill Baptist Church website at http//negia.com/~mhbc/bicentennial.html . The families living in this community had previously been found in these Georgia counties: Jackson, Clarke, Wilkes, Oglethorpe, Greene, Elbert, Madison, Walton, and Morgan. Some descendants remained in Georgia (and are still members of this church today); others moved westward into Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Today the founding families of Mars Hill Baptist Church have descendants all over the United States. Included in this volume are the first two Church Minute Books transcriptions, the earliest existing membership list (1936), the Daniell Ledger and the Bradberry Almanac (two manuscripts recording deaths in the Mars Hill Community), census records, estate records, cemetery records, Bible records, marriage records, and other records. Copies are $50 each post paid (GA residents add 7% sales tax). Only 500 copies of this limited edition were printed! I am new to the list and I have a Tabitha STOKES that married Zachariah JORDAN in 1807 in Clarke Co. I just discovered that Stroud was the middle name of their youngest son. Since this is an unusual given name, I though perhaps their is a STROUD connection somewhere. Does anyone know of any STROUD - STOKES - JORDAN connections from this area in the late 1700s or early 1800s? Sandra

I would like to get in touch with anyone who has information on or connections to my Cooper family. My great-grandfather, Rev. James P. Cooper (b.1873 Meriwether Co., GA; d.1932 Athens,GA) was the son of A. J. Cooper (b.1825, d.1902) and Ann H. Mathews (b.1829, d.1907). His first wife Nina and their two children died within 3 years of their 1896 marriage. He then married Leila Moore(b.1881, d.1923) in Dec. 1899. My grandfather, James G. Cooper (b.1901 Griffin, GA, d.1942 Baltimore, MD) was the first child of that marriage. Other children of Rev. James P. Cooper were Joe Cooper, William J.Cooper , Roy Cooper, Coy Cooper, Jack Cooper, Charles Cooper, Kenneth Cooper, Ina Cooper, Nina Cooper, Sarah Cooper Petty, Lucile Cooper Bales, Edna Cooper Gregory, Bessie Cooper and Kathleen Cooper. Some of his children may have been from his third wife Annie, who he married after Leila's death in 1923. If anyone has information about these Coopers, please contact me at [email protected] . Thanks! Laraine
