    2. I have a copy of a newpaper clipping from a Greene County, GA paper, Thursday, April 16, 1868 which reads as follows: DROWNED Mr. John Kelley, of of the oldest citizens of this county, was drowned in the Oconee River, one day last week. It is thought he fell from a bateau while fishing. Mr. Kelley wa the grandfather of J. F. Hall, of our city. This John Kelley/Kelly was my gg Grandfather. The J. F. 3. Dan, why do you believe the children were indentured? Did James McDonald die with no estate? If so, there are bound apprenticeship records housed in the Records Room of the Clarke Co. Courthouse. Also there should be records in the minute books for the Court of Ordinary (now Probate Court) for that time period, but there's no index to these (yet!), so you would have to go thru page by page to locate your family. Good luck! 2. Nancy Clayton
    3. Hello: Clarke County, Georgia researchers: I am searching for any information about my McCAY family who lived in the Athens area (Clarke County, Georgia) from 1861 till 1870. It is known that several members of the McCAY line moved to Georgia from South Carolina from the early 1800s on. I am looking for the location of William Boling McCAY and wife, Arena Catherine Bell-McCAY and children. Three children were born near Athens - William Andrew McCAY, Walter Bell McCAY, and Seldon Boling McCAY - see below for more on them. Does anyone have any idea about where their farm house might have been located in Clarke County during the years 1861-1870? I know that William was a blacksmith, and worked in a gun factory during the War Between the States. He also served in Captain F.L. Cook's Company - 23rd Georgia Infantry Battalion - also known as Georgia Local Defense - Enfield Rifle Battalion. He was employed at the armory by Captain Cook in 1863 and 1864. 3. The U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System at http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html can be a godsend in locating something in the U.S.! It's free, too! (Well, our tax dollars at work!) One thing to remember is that names of militia districts, streams & towns may have changed over the past 300 years, so if you don't find it on this website, don't give up - they just haven't been told about this particular name yet!!! When you find out where your site was, let them know!! When we search on FEATURE NAME: Harris, STATE: Georgia, we came up with these locations: Feature Name St County Name Type Latitude Longitude USGS 7.5' Map Harris Branch GA Columbia stream 333429N 0821859W Appling Harris Branch GA Glascock stream 331336N 0823742W Mitchell <<<<<<<<------------ Harris Branch GA Glynn stream 312644N 0813707W Cox Harris Branch GA Meriwether stream 325529N 0843626W Woodbury Harris Creek GA Charlton stream 303901N 0820245W Toledo Harris Creek GA Dade stream 345207N 0853423W Trenton Harris Creek GA Forsyth stream 341144N 0841343W Cumming Harris Creek GA Gilmer stream 343629N 0843745W Oakman Harris Creek GA Greene stream 334028N 0831723W Greshamville Harris Creek GA Haralson stream 334713N 0851539W Tallapoosa North Harris Creek GA Heard stream 331945N 0850401W Franklin Harris Neck Creek GA McIntosh stream 313621N 0811727W Shellman Bluff Now we must rule out the locations that don't meet your criteria - Harris Branch on the Waters of the Ogeechee River. We click on each item in the list in turn, then click on the EPA's "Find the Watershed" link at the bottom of the screen. This will tell us precisely which major river Harris Branch flows into. Thus we find the Harris Branch in Glascock County probably fills the bill - it is in the Upper Ogeechee Watershed - http://www.epa.gov/surf2/hucs/03060201/ Hope this helps! 1. HAILES, HAYLES, HALES, HAIL, HALE
    2. Wiley Hailes, my gg-grandfather married Susan Jane Buchanan on 15 Mar 1810 in Elbert County, Georgia. This lady, of course, was my gg-grandmother. Her maiden name was not Buchanan because she had a daughter, also Susan Buchanan, who is named as his wife's daughter in Wiley's will. I hope someone out there can help me find the maiden name of my gg-grandmother, Susan Jane Buchanan. I would like to know who she had married before and when and where. I know divorce was not a ordinary occurance in that time but I would like to know what happened to her first husband, divorce, desertion, dead, what? My great grandfather, Reed C. Hailes, was sherrif of Greene County Georgia in 1866, which puts him in league with the carpet baggers. So be it. I might have done the same thing in his place. I don't have any idea who his wife was other than her given name was Sarah. If anyone can help me in this effort I will give them a Yankee Dime. Gordon R. Hale Jr. Grand Prairie, TX 75050

    3. Beth, the Clarke Co. Superior Court MINUTE books would have to be read to find this information - these books are not indexed, but contain a day-to-day log of the actions in the court. I don't know whether the loose papers pertaining to this trial may have survived, but there is a project starting after the first of the year, coordinated by the Athens-Clarke County Probate Judge's Office & the Athens-Clarke County LIbrary Heritage Room to catalog the probate records for the 1800s. Hope this might turn up some loose papers for other courts too! Have a wonderful holiday!
