The Old Athens Cemetery is very small, not many graves there. My 5th Great Grandmother Winifred Aycock LANE is buried in the Old Athens Cemetery. Heather
Jo, I think the cemetery she was talking about is Oconee Hill Cemetery which is the successor of the Old Athens Cemetery next to the Fine Arts bldg on Jackson St., just east of the main UGA library. The surveys of the cemetery on Jackson St. were republished in the Clarke County Cemeteries book put out by the Athens Historical Society last year (1999). They are currently working on re-surveying Oconee Hill Cemetery. If you'd like to become a member of AHS, it's only $10 per year - send check to Athens Historical Society, P.O. Box 7745, Athens, GA 30604-7745 & you'll get a quarterly newsletter & notices of publication of the OHC book, in addition to more info on the Bicentennial of Athens exhibit at the Georgia Museum of Art Jan-March 2001! Anyone with memorabilia from the early years of Athens or items made by Athens craftspeople that would be interested in displaying these items, contact the AHS exhibit coordinator Mary Bondurant Warren at [email protected] or call her at (706) 549-1264. I saw this old cemetery, next to U of GA, IN 1994, and was appalled at the appearance of it. I read the sign that the NATIONAL SOCIETY OF COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICAN IN GA, was responsible for it's upkeep. I am qualified to belong to this group, but wonder what they really do? Many of the headstones are very old and it isn't kept up very well. I did see they have been in the process of working on cleaning it up some. I found over 16 graves that belong to relatives of mine that I didn't know were buired their! Small world, huh? Mainly POPE graves, so if anyone had POPES let me know and I can send you the transcription of the graves, or if you want me to send it to the list, I can do that too:) Let me know what I can do for anyone in regards to this cemetery. I would certainly hope that this cemetery would be preserved. The counties of Clarke, Oconee, and any other counties that were taken from this area should have some input. The historical, preservation, and genealogical societies would most likely be happy to work with your client and the county to preserve and maintain this cemetery. I believe there are also laws that protect cemeteries such as this one. At the very least, a survey or inventory of the headstones should be taken. This would ensure that researchers and descendants of the people buried in the cemetery would have access to this information. Who knows, I or you may have relatives buried there. I am researching my GRANT, WALKER, OWEN, RICHARDSON lines and others not yet known to me in this area. Faye Jones Yager - Alexandria, MN -----Original Message----- From: David W. Says that the first railroad to be chartered in Ga. was the Georgia Railroad in 1832. It was a venture undertaken by Athens citizens, and it went from Augusta (Richmond Co.) to Eatonton (Putnam Co.). It was later extended to Athens, and finally west of the Chatahoochee. Source:This is Your Georgia, by Bernice McCullar, edited and revised by Stanley Chambers, formerly executive Editor, Readers Digest Special Projects., printed by Viewpoint Publications, Montgomery, Ala. Copyrighted in 1972, LOC Card No. 72-8428, page 354 carries the same basic information regarding the first railroad charter, it's inception by Athens (Clarke Co.) citizens, name of railroad and it's route (Augusta-to- Eatonton, later to Athens and to west of the Chatahoochee, except the older version carries the name of one of the citizens, it's president, James Camak. Hope this helps.
