Posted on: Clarke County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Clarke?read=460 Surname: Bickerstaff ------------------------- The Bickerstaff sirname appears in county records of Franklin, Jackson, Clarke, Wilkes, Elbert and Ogelthorpe Counties of Georgia during the years between 1789 and 1815. Given names of the Bickerstaff men listed are John, Johnson, Henry and Robert. Rowan County, NC records indicate that John was living there prior to coming to GA. It seems as if John was the father of Johnson, Henry and Robert. I have been told by other researchers that Johnson is the father of Henry (Clay?) and John L. (Lucky?) Bickerstaff but have been cited no documentation. Is there anyone out there who knows if this is a fact and can cite documentation? All help greatly appreciated.
Hello List, I am a new subscriber. Does anyone have any knowledge of a Sparks Fort that was built about 1785 four miles outside the present day location of Athens? My ancestor Matthew Sparks came to this area with other settlers from Wilkes Co, NC about 1784-85 and built the fort. Matthew was killed by the Indians in November, 1793 while he was out hunting. Thanks, Jan in Texas

Posted on: Clarke County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Clarke?read=452 Surname: Atkinson, Willoughby ------------------------- Ellis Willoughby was born in Clark in 1805. He was one of the 12 children of Rev. Soldier Willoughby Willoughby and Jerusalem Jones Willoughby He married Elizabeth DURHAM 31 Dec 1829, in Clark County, Georgia. Both Census and Estate Records document that he and Elizabeth had five children; Ruth, Susan, Martha L, Nancy, and Mary Ann. Ellis Willoughby was living in Clark County, Georgia. in 1830. He and his family, including wife, Elizabeth Durham, are living in HH 305, next door to his brothers, Thomas and James. Upon the death of Ellis, Circa 1841, his brother David became the guardian his children. From the returns, which begin in 1842, it can be seen that David was not able to keep all the children at his home. He boarded them with friends and/or relatives. The Returns further show that shortly before or after the death of her father, Ruth Willoughby married Burkett Atkinson. Closer observation of the returns also show that two of the children moved to Pike County, Georgia to live with her Aunt and Uncle, Josiah Pyron and Elizabeth Willoughby Pyron. Josiah and Elizabeth became the legal guardian of Nancy and Mary Ann. In the 1850 Pike County Census, Mary Wiloby, born in 1832, is listed with Josiah, Elizabeth and two of their children. Pirant is common early spelling of Pyron. It is thought to be of French origin. I would like to correspond with anyone who know the ancestry of Mr Burkett Atkinson and/or the Durhams. Thank you very kindly.

(then Clark) Both he and his wife, Jerusalem Jones Willoughby are buried in the Cemetery of Antioch Church in Oconee County. In April, 2000, I was provided with pictures of a marker recently placed on the gravesite of Jerusalem. Her date of death on the marker is 1853. The unmarked grave beside her is that of her husband William. Since Jerusalem is not mentioned in Williams Will or any of the Estate Records or Returns, I believe she preceded him in death. (1826) The land adjacent to where Antioch Christian Church is now located was owned by the Willoughby Family. William WilloughbysÂ’ son David, as directed by his fathers will, retained the family plantation, but sold a small part of the family land to church members to build the present day Church.
