Thomas Willoughby, first born of William Willoughby b. 1759 REV soldier. Thomas left Clark County and moved to Chambers County, Alabama around 1835. The following is from Chambers County Tract Book, by Ruth Crump and Cemeteries of Chambers County. Both books are published by the Historical Association. Thomas Willoughby bought 40 Acres of Land in Section 10, Township 24, Range 25 12 Dec 1836. # of Certificate of warrent is 5885. Thomas McLendon bought 120 Acres one month before this. Thomas and Aggie are buried in New Hope Christian Church, The First Christian Church in Alabama, organized by Rev Wyche MNalone Jenkins Elder 19 Jan 1850. George was the youngest of the children. Randal, not being able to care for his own property, is to have it controlled by David till "such time that is capable". Clark County census records show that Randal is still living with David as late as 1830-40. Randal and two of his brothers, James and Ellis, drew land in the Cherokee Land Lottery of 1838. Family members tell the story that during the Civil War when General Sherman's troops came through town, the Union Lieutenant and his soldiers came to the Hardigree Homeplace. Since the Lieutenant was a Mason and so was Elisha, his Homeplace, food, stock and belonging were spared from being taken or burned. Elisha wrote his will on 12 Dec 1888 and it was probated 1 Apr 1889 in Jackson Co. The will named his wife Mary, who was to get 125 acres, the houses, a bureau, one marble top center table, one set of chairs, one be and two bedsteads. It named his nine Living children: A.E. Marshal.D.j, George F, William, Thomas, H.A., Ellen Lyle and Phoebe Carruth. His two grandson John and Walters, sons of D.J. were also listed. All were to receive 12 1/1 acres each. The tiny Community of Watkinsville, Georgia in Oconee County, was a center of commerce, discourse, and political activity. In Watkinsville, Farmington, and other small towns, both in Georgia, and throughout the South, the "Church" was the center for many activities, both social and religious. It also served as a place for further discourse. The simple "art of talking with each other" was an important part of Southern Culture during the 1800s. Antioch Christian Church was a very active church in which many activities took place. The Willoughby Family, along with many of the other families associated with them, were active members of this church. Many of them are buried in the Antioch Church Cemetery. Willoughby, Pridgen, Hardigree, Elder, Durham, and Saxon Families were active in both the social, religious, and political life of their Community. All of these families were landowners. During the early 1800s, landowners were looked upon as social and political leaders of their communities. The land adjacent to where Antioch Christian Church is now located was owned by the Willoughby Family. William WILLOUGHBYS son, as directed by his fathers will, retained the family plantation, but sold a small part of the family land to church members to build the present day church.
