I am at a impasse in researching my paternal grandmother's family. I know that she was the daughter Leila Dawson and John Thomas Spence, and granddaughter of Fred Dawson and Elizabeth ??. Even though I have conflicting data on date of birth, I believe that the Fred Dawson (listed below as number 1) might be the same person as Frederick Dawson (listed below as number 2). Saw your ref to STRONG FAMILY. I have a line that I have not been able to complete. I have a John Strong b abt 1675 in VA married a Sherwood?. His son was John Strong b 1698 Va. His gr-grandson Elijah Strong b 1785 married into my Matthews line - Mary Polly Mathews b 1789 .They migrated with several other Strong family members to Alabama. Do they tie into your line??? Surnames: Thompson-Strong Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yc.2ADE/794.1 Message Board Post: Jean, According to mom (Mary Bondurant Warren) the Strong family attended what we know today as the Cherokee Corner Methodist Church - at that time it was a Presbyterian Church. Sarah's brother Charles (our ancestor), wife Sarah Thompson (John's sister) and some of their family were buried at Cherokee Corner but their remains were later moved by Burwell Pope to Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens and re-interred in his lot. Cherokee Corner sits on the present day county line between Clarke and Oglethorpe Cos., GA. Our Moss family also lived in the same area, hence the creek creating the county line boundary at Cherokee Corner is called Moss Creek. According to our family records Sarah "Salley" Strong was the daughter of John Strong and Elizbeth Turnbull and was born July 12, 1767 in Hanover or Louisa Co., VA. She married March 21, 1785 in Goochland Co., VA John Thompson who was born about 1762 in VA and died before May 7, 1810 in Clarke Co., GA. John left a will which he signed Feb. 6, 1810 and was probated May 7, 1810. We don't have a death date for Sarah Strong Thompson recorded in the family records but know that she was living at the time John wrote his will (he named wife Salley, sons Richard, William & Martin, daus. Franky Price, Betsey Middlebrooks, Sally & Polly Thompson; friend Charles Strong & Thomas McCoy as executors -- Thomas McCoy was the son-in-law of Charles Strong, John's brother-in-law). Also one further note about graves being marked - here in this area of Georgia, until 1850 it was unusual to find an engraved tombstone marking a persons grave, usually was marked by a rock or fieldstone, unless you were affluent and could afford to arrange to have a tombstone "imported" to mark your grave. If you find a grave marked with death dates earlier than 1850, it's highly likely it was placed there years later by family or others, making the information potentially incorrect. Do you know anything about Gordon and Mary Francis Lovern buried at Mars Hill Baptist Church in 1925 and 1909 respectfully? Yes, it does contain obituaries. I found my gg grandfathers there in an 1856 edition. It had quite a bit of interesting information. When a man died back then they posted the sale or settlement of his estate in the local newspaper with dates as to when the sale would take place. I think it was a legal requirement. I found a great little ad put in the paper regarding the sale of my gg grandfathers plantation with a brief description of the property and the home. Go fot it!

I have a Steven Cloud Hester married 27 Dec 1832 to Margaret Furlow Foster b. 2 Jun 1815 in Scull Shoals District. They had 2 daughters; Julia Ann Hester b. 7 July 1836 and Martha Foster Hester b. 7 Dec 1837. I believe that the Hesters lived next door to the one of the Fosters in western Clarke county. This area was later to become OCONEE county. Somewhere in my census records I believe that 2 Hester children were living with Fosters but can't place the info right now.
