My parents attended the reunion. Cant remember much of what they had to say about it except they had a nice time. Lots of old pictures there I know.

Anyone interested in preserving the history of Athens and the surrounding area will be welcomed as a member of the Athens Historical Society. Individual membership is only $10 per calendar year and you will receive quarterly newsletters, the annual volume of papers, the Athens Historian; as well as interesting speakers at each quarterly meeting (Jan, Mar, May & Oct.). (The best bargain in town!) The next meeting is Sunday, May 19th, 3:00 p.m., in the Auditorium of the Athens-Clarke County Library off Baxter Street in Athens. Our speakers will be Ms. Chantel Dunham, Director of Development for the UGA Libraries, and Mr. Milton Leathers, who is well known in the Athens area for his work in preserving Athens' history. They will present a slide show on the Treasures of the University of Georgia Libraries - followed by a discussion on the importance of preserving the history contained in old family letters and papers. The October 20th meeting, also in the ACC Library Auditorium, will feature former UGA Coach Dan Magill, who will speak on the History of Sports at UGA. I bet all the gents will really enjoy this one! You don't have to be a member of the Society to attend the meetings - they're free and open to the public! Everyone is welcome! If you'd like to become a member & be included in the 2002 AHS Directory, send your check payable to Athens Historical Society to AHS - Dues, P.O. Box 7745, Athens, GA 30604-7745, before May 25th (to be in the directory). Dues are $10 - Individual; $15 - Family; $35 - Supporting; and $50 - Patron. Thanks, Eve
Hi, Jimmie, the updated book is still not in print yet - Mrs. Charlotte Thomas Marshall, who is doing 99% of the work herself, has declared that it will be ready by the end of this year! It will be a goldmine because she's adding all sorts of info from many sources to the transcriptions of existing grave markers in an effort to find possible burials that never were marked or for whom the markers are no longer there. I'll be sure to post a message on the Clarke Genweb site when it's out! Thanks for asking, Eve ----- Original Message ----- From: Jimmie Boyett To: ebmayes@myexcel.com Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2002 9:58 AM Subject: AHS Dear Ms. Mayes, I am interested in purchasing a copy of the updated Oconee Hill Cemetery book as described on the Clarke County Rootsweb page. A note on the Lester Cemetery, in response to Eva's note. There is an old iron fence or remnants of one in the cemetery, family says that is where Lewis and Elizabeth Patman Lester are buried. The cemetery was vandalized in 1981 after the family had cleaned it and fenced it. That could be why some graves could not be found in 1994. When the cemetery was vandalized the fence was cut, tombstones broken and the iron fence around Elizabeth and Lewis graves bent and torn down. The cemetery had been restored by family members only a year before. Catherine, I hope this is the one you mean. There are two more cemeteries in Clarke Co. where Lesters & other families are buried, but this is the only one AHS found that was called the LESTER Cemetery. This info came from the book of cemeteries published by Athens Historical Society in 1999. LESTER CEMETERY GMD 241 - Location #6 Driving directions: From the Loop 10 overpass on the Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 78/29), proceed 8/10 mile west on the Atlanta Highway to Cleveland Road. Turn north (right) onto Cleveland Road, travel ½ miles, and cross railroad tracks. Just after crossing tracks, turn right onto paved private driveway. Cemetery is located behind 840 Cleveland Road, up the hill in field. The original transcription was done in the 1980s by COGS and the transcriber had added information from family research. Four markers shown on the original transcription could not be found later. Hello Everyone, Please, I am desperate. I have been searching for a marriage record for my grandparents so I can join the United Daughters of the Confederacy, I am writing to all the counties in north and north east, GA and east, TN. If this get through here are the names. William Arthur PHILLIPS born 1872 GA (Maybe Jackson County) Married Donzella or Donnie MCDONALD b. 1883 Crossville,TN My mother was born 1916 Hamilton Co. TN my Aunt 1921 Chula,Tifts County,GA William PHILLIPS died in an accident Monroe CO, TN in 1926. I may be able to use a census with them both on it, but the only one would be 1920. So far no luck. My grandfathers death certificate is Mrs. WM. Phillips instead of her name. My mother and Aunts birth cert. has both their names but does not say they were married. I really appreciate any little bit of information or advise. Fran Murphy Blount County, TN

I have just been reading the material you posted on Oct. 29, 2000. On about the 5th page you have John Crawford Edwards (my ancestor) has being born in 1717. I hope this is a typo. because most of us have his birth date as 1727. Do you know which would be correct?
