    3. Teresa, Was your Hughes line also in Cherokee County? My 2nd great grandmother's brother, Moses D. McCollum, married a Sarah E. Hughes and left her a widow when he died of disease early in the Civil War. Her mother's name was Margaret A (maiden name unknown). Her unknown father died before 1850. Sarah had several siblings, including James L. Hughes, born about 1837. My research, supported by family stories, is that James was also a close friend of Moses and his brother Samuel who served with him in the Civil War. Shortly after the war when "the boys" came home, James fathered my great grandfather, William E. McCollum with Frances Evaline "Eva" McCollum. She didn't marry until much later, to a Henry Jordan Ellison, and never had any other children. She lived with her parents until they died in the early 1880s and William was pretty much raised by his grandparents. He went on to become a Baptist minister in the Noonday Baptist Association and was pastor of a number of churches in Cherokee, Cobb and Bartow counties until his early death in 1921. Another family story is that he preached the funeral of the father who never acknowledged him as his son.
