    1. Civil War Monuments
    2. Hi to All, Who do you contact to find out if a Civil War monument was placed on a grave? I know this is a weird request, but my aunt feels that our ancestor, Daniel Bennett, had this type of monument placed on his grave. He served in the Civil War. He died 2/5/1889 based on the pension papers. We are unsure where he is buried, but his last residence was Acworth, Cobb County, GA (1895). We are hoping to find out whoever places Civil War monuments on graves, will maybe have his burial info. Thanks for any leads, Tracey Nichols Fearless Leader of Cadette and Senior Troop 625

    3. Daniel does not appear in a comprehensive survey of Cherokee County burials completed about 1997. Since he lived in Acworth, it is quite likely that he was buried in Cobb County. You might try posting a query on that message board. I'm not aware of any particular organization that placed Civil War monuments on veteran's graves at the time of his death, although the United Confederate Veterans organization was very active in the Atlanta area. If the monument was placed well after his death, the Veterans Administration has a program under which it provides, free of charge, brass tablets or marble tombstones for Civil War veterans whose burial sites are known but whose graves were not previously marked. This program has been abused in some cases, because I've seen both family purchased older markers and the newer VA ones on the same graves. W.
