I am searching for an obituary notice for John Washington McCollum who died at the age of 78 in Cherokee Co. GA on 3 Nov 1883. What publications were in print at this time? It is believed that he was the s/o Daniel McCollum (b. 1760 in NJ and d. Habersham Co. GA). I am hopeful that an obituary notice would confirm this. (This information is needed for an SAR application.) Thanks.. Lynne in the beautiful northeast GA mountains
Lynne, I checked in "Annotated Obituaries from the Cherokee Advance, 1880-1938" by John Carver, published by woodward-geiger.com in Jasper, GA. The only reference to a possible John Washington McCollum was in the following obituary. May 19, 1883 Mr. Anderson, 82 years of age, was buried at Shiloh Thursday last. Funeral services conducted by Rev. J. W. McCollum. (Page 2 Col 1) Could this be him? There are only 3 obituaries listed for November 1883 and none of them are McCollum's. Sorry that I could not be of more help. Lynne, I've scoured all of the Cherokee County sources I could locate for John's and Hannah's obituaries, but found nothing. I've also gone over Cherokee County will and probate records with no luck. They were my third great grandparents and they left very few official records of their existence. The Reverend J. W. McCollum is actually James W. McCollum, son of Jesse Miller McCollum, who was the son of William "Billy" McCollum. Billy was daniel's eldest son. Here's his obituary: The Reverend James W. McCollum's obituary appeared in the August 30, 1907 edition of the Cherokee Advance as follows: "Rev. James McCollum died last Wednesday afternoon with typhoid fever. Mr. McCollum was in his 72nd year and spent most of his life at the place where he died. , which was settled by his father, Jesse McCollum, who died in his 96th year in February last. He was a Mason and a Confederate soldier, a member of the 28th Georgia regiment and served his country with heroism and bravery throughout the war. He is survived by his wife, no children blessed this union. Her brother, A.L. Kennett is her next of kin. His remains were interred at Shiloh Church, of which Rev. McCollum was a member, having joined there 50 odd years ago. Also surviving are brothers, W.T. McCollum of Canton; R.A. McCollum of Marietta; Chas. J. McCollum of Atlanta; sisters Mrs T.J. Killian and Mrs D.A. Willis of Univeter. (page 5 column 3) (born 13 January 1836; died 28 August 1907)" Wally ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynne" <lynner1@alltel.net> To: <GACHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2006 2:54 PM Subject: [GACHEROK-L] Obituary Needed - McCollum >I am searching for an obituary notice for John Washington McCollum who died >at the age of 78 in Cherokee Co.
