Reading one of the email messages I received this morning reminded me how much time and effort others have put into making it possible for me to access so much information so economically. We are the benefactor of the work done by members of local genealogical organizations who have walked cemeteries, searched records, collected obituaries, and a wealth of other information from their community and published it making it available to those of us who live great distances from their community. It is certainly more economical for me to buy a book than spend the time and money to travel to the area to do the research myself. The internet has made so much more information available to us in our homes. It is a wonderful resource, but it is not FREE. People spend time collecting all that information. Computers and internet access or not free, and someone must post the information, and hopefully someone has checked the accuracy before it is circulated around the world. Few of us take time to consider the cost of maintaining any organization. Printing and postage to provide newsletters and other publications to those of us who live far away is an ever increasing expense. Maintaining a research facility is very costly. Each of us should consider the work, effort, and cost of publishing information, and remember to give recognition to those who did the work and paid the cost. Our purchases and contribution enables the group to maintain and enhance their collections. I cannot say enough to thank the genealogy "angels" who do all the hard work and contribute so much of time and money to preserve the genealogical and historical material in their community and make it available to the present and future generations. Dear List, This is to invite all descendants of the Pruett, Hook, Holbrook, Westbrook, Day, Merriman, Wilson, Leverett, Cobb, Johnston, Walker or any other families associated with Pleasant Hill, Darter Chapel, Milton Chapel or otherwise known as Birmingham United Methodist Church to the ground breaking service on July 18th of a new Sanctuary. This church began in 1838 on Taylor Road in what was then Cherokee County on land donated by the Hook family. The church moved to the present location near the intersection of what is now known as Birmingham Highway and Birmingham Road in 1870 on land donated by PJ Wilson. The location is 6 miles north of the antiques stores in Crabapple near Alpharetta. This church was part of what was at times a nine church circuit Methodist Church. In the mid 1800s this was part of the Dahlonega circuit and encompassed many miles. Since church was usually only held once a month at any given church, many members of other church denominations worshiped together as often as possible where services were held. Other churches in the area also with long histories are: Boiling Springs Primitive Baptist, Crabapple Baptist, Liberty Grove Baptist (which was at one time Methodist) and Union Hill United Methodist. If your ancestor was a member of one of those churches, chances are he also worshiped at Birmingham at some time or another. The 62 acres of land is beautiful and probably looks much as it did in the 1800s. We will be keeping it as undisturbed as possible. This will not be a typical church groundbreaking. It will be a true celebration and an historic occassion. We will have a barbeque meal and entertainment by the Swingin' Medalions. All are invited, but we especially want to extend an invitation to any descendants of anyone associated with the Church. If you know of anyone, please contact me. I am compiling a history of the Birmingham Community and want any and all information, especially photographs. Thanks and have a safe and wonderful weekend! Best wishes and thank you to all of you veterans! Carole Johnson Historian, Birmingham United Methodist Church

I have ran across the 1850 census with this family but not the 1860. On the 1900 Faulkner Co, AR census, Frances Holbrook has her mother listed as born in South Carolina and her father in GA. Guess the South Carolina birthplace for her mother has stuck in my head and that's what I've been banging against every wall I've came across. I have tried as best I can to run down any of Frances siblings listed on the 1850 census in hopes of running across something or somebody else researching this family and have came up empty handed. Thanks so much for your help and if you or anyone else comes across any marriages, burials or a general idea where the aliens picked them up at ... I and my family would be most grateful. ----- Original Message ----- From: <mccollumw@comcast.net> To: <GACHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 04, 2004 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [GACHEROK-L] Holbrook/Naylor/Duke > You've probably seen this census information and dismissed it, but it's worth another look: > June 7, 1860, Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia > Page (looks like) 24 > Household 171, family 171 > C. Hello, I have been trying to trace my ancestor, John W. Gossett, and I think he moved to Cherokee County from Madison. There is a John Gosset in the 1850 census index (household # 1186). Does anyone have access to this census? What about the 1840 census? Also, does anyone have a transcription of the Gossett Cemetery there in Cherokee? Thanks, Peter J. Good. I have sent the 1840 plus 3 Gossett marriages I found. The emails haven't arrived in my inbox yet, probably because my ISP is checking them out. If you don't get them in a few minutes, let me know and I will send them directly to you. Jackie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter J. Ancestry doesn't have the 1840 linked, but Madison County at usgenweb does, so I went ahead and am copying and pasting here from the information (not images, but a transcription) that they have online. Its going to look unreadable on this email, but copy and paste it into a Word document and the column headings and information should line up. Jackie PS this is No Where District...a very interesting name. Found them in 1850. I included the next door neighbor, as it's likely he is his son. If this is the right John Gossett, let me know and I'll see if I can find him in 1840 for you.
