NORTH GEORGIA TRIBUNE, published Canton, Ga Friday October 22nd, 1948 BODY OF 95 YEAR OLD WOMAN FOUND LAST MONDAY AFTER WEEK'S SEARCH : The body of Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Rabun, age 95, was found in an open wooded area by Ed Huey about three-quarters of a mile from Mrs. Rabun's home last Monday afternoon. Mr. Huey discovered the object of more than a week's search by police and G.B.I between sundown and dark on his property while he was checking on some mining holes for Mrs. Rabun's body an doing a little squirrel hunting. Mrs. Rabun disappeared two weeks ago when she was last seen walking from her home toward the mail box. County police was notified of her absence on Saturday following her disappearance on Thursday and since that time a search had been under way. Her home is about five miles west of Woodstock near Bascombe Church. County police and the G.B.I were notified of the discovery and immediate investigation followed. A small area around the body was roped off until Dr. Herman Jones , state toxicologist, arrived and examined the body for clues of the woman having been murdered. No such signs were found. A coroner's verdict was that Mrs. Rabun died from exposure plus natural causes. There was plenty of evidence that Mrs. Rabun had fallen and, because of her feebleness, could not arise. Garments and bits of clothing were found over an area of about 70 feet, where it was thought she had crawled. Fifty to sixty feet below the body were found her shoes and bonnet. Approximately 12 feet in the opposite direction were found her purse containing a ten dollar bill, and her walking stick, leaned against a small pine tree. Around each side of where she lay and especially in the vicinity of her feet was much evidence of struggle, for pine needles were pushed aside into little heaps and bare spots of earth were showing. Dr. Jones stated that she very probably could have lived two days before having contracted pneumonia or some other ailment caused by exposure. Her feet ankles, arms and hands were scratched and bruised from her efforts to regain a walking position. There are no houses near the place she was found, her own house being the nearest. It was believed she was searching for herbs from which to make winter teas. Her footseps could be tracked from where she was found back to a small branch about on hundred yards away. The direction indicated that she had made a circular course from the vicinity of the mail box to where her body was discovered. Mrs. Rabun was born in Fannin County, August 28, 1853, and was a member of the Zion Methodist church. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 20, at three o'clock from Bascombe Methodist Church. Burial was in Bascombe Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include four dauthers , Mrs. D.G. Jarrard of near Woodstock, Mrs Dave Jenkins of Gainesville, Mrs. Mart Williams, of Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. T.D. Cook, of Atlanta; two sisters Mrs. Callie Parris of Blue Ridge, Mrs. Willis Woody, of Morganton; three brothes, J.F. and J. W Abercrombie of Newman and C.T. Abercrombie of Carrolton. Additional Comments: I am related to the Mrs. Mart Williams mentioned as a daughter of the deceased. Babe was a "Healer" and a "Midwife", she was well known for her healing teas and poltice. This was my Great Great Grandmother Sara Elizabeth "Babe" Abercrombie Raburn widow of Henry M. Raburn (spelled Raburn not Rabun). She was the daughter of James Columbus Abercrombie and Mary Ann Sina Head of the Fannin Co., GA Abercrombies. 2. Wyndell Taylor
    3. I want to wish each of the members of the Cherokee County Georgia Mailing List a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The wish that I send for 2005 is that an unknown cousin shows up for lunch and brings all those lost ancestors. <g> If this year is like the years past, there will be many new people who will receive a computer for Christmas. In turn they will discover the Internet and will be joining this, and other mailing list in search of their family lines. Some will be new at the game, so each of us needs to remember when we were new, and help where we can. Again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Wyndell Taylor List Manager

    1. Julius L. Dowda. 1838 - 1913.
    2. Julius L. Dowda of Cherokee Co and Fulton Co. Born- June 27, 1838 Died- Jan. 13, 1913 I am not related but the historian of Hillcrest Cemetery in East Point. and for the Hillcrest Memorial Association. He is buried there and one of our "Highlight" graves. We know him as "Julious" (with an "O") I am looking for a photo to include on the Confederate veterans page of the Historians site for the cemetery as well as to place in the cemetery records once we have them transcribed, also helps when I give tours to place photos on graves so people can put a face to the story and the grave. If you happen to have one to share, I have a policy of stating that the photo belongs to and is copyrighted to the person that loaned the image to be used, I also block the page from right clicks to protect the vets photos. We have photos of two of the 3 vets in the cemetery and Julius' tribute for the cemetery historys sake is blank. Here is the site and a photo of his gravestone is there along with a little about him, not much but I am working on it. The photo is linked so it can be followed to anther page where it can be saved and downloaded. http://www.geocities.com/memories_in_stone/hillcrest.html once there, click on the "Confederate Veterans of Hillcrest" link in the menu near the top of the page. We have a link to another site that has his diary. I would also like to confirm for placement in the HIstory of the cemetery I am writing if the Julius Dowda in HIllcrest is the same that was a Methodist Minister? Also would like contact with the family member that is care taker of the grave (or the person in the family known to have control) We would like to as a Confederate Medal stake placed on the grave and we will raise the funds to do so. If anyone is related, can share info and maybe a photo, please contact us. Thanks Once again to view his gravestone... http://www.geocities.com/memories_in_stone/hillcrest.html once there, click on the "Confederate Veterans of Hillcrest" link in the menu near the top of the page.

    3. Thanks Rebecca - The question was because of the numerous changes throughout the counties with boundary lines - taking from one county and making another county, etc. Judith's document referenced Ophir as Forsyth County, and she could not find it in Forsyth, thus the explanation, I also didn't realize the message only came to me, I thought it came across the list because of the Subject - GACHEROK. -----Original Message----- From: Rebecca Bannister [mailto:rbannister@comcast.net] Sent: Sunday, November 28, 2004 7:50 PM To: GACHEROK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [GACHEROK-L] Isaac BROWN I don't understand the Ophir question -- the Ophir church and surrounding community is in the same place it has always been. 1. Cherokee History Course

    3. Last year I attended a Cherokee history course in Rome, GA, that was taught by an official from Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, OK. The 4-day course (only $20), which came with a HUGE book (over 4-inches thick) was an amazing event. They are offering the course again this year. Information from their press release follows. I have posted other documents on my website, if anyone is interested in more information. Go to: www.scrankin.com/CherokeeHistory/registration2004.pdf www.scrankin.com/CherokeeHistory/media2004.pdf www.scrankin.com/CherokeeHistory/syllabus2004.pdf From their press release: "The Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home in conjunction with The Cherokee Nation will offer residents of Northwest Georgia and surrounding areas a four-day, thirty-two hour course in Cherokee Nation History over two weekends, November 6-7 and November 20-21, 2004, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day. Conducted at the Heritage Hall Campus of Floyd College in Rome, Georgia the course is open to the public, with only a twenty-dollar registration fee. All course materials will be provided. Citizens of the Cherokee Nation are especially urged to attend. Featured recently in the Cherokee Phoenix and Indian Advocate, this acclaimed course covers significant aspects of Cherokee legal, social, and cultural history from pre-contact to the present day. The course, addresses treaty rights and legislative agendas, as well as questions of culture and citizenship, with the goal of providing a better understanding of Cherokee nationality, leadership, and identity. As part of a new initiative to teach Cherokee history from a Cherokee perspective, community courses are one aspect of a tribal effort that also includes teaching Cherokee Nation employees, developing public school curriculum, entering into partnerships with universities and colleges, collecting community and family histories, and teaching the course in the Cherokee language. In 2002, Harvard University honored the Cherokee Nation History Course as one of sixteen exemplary initiatives nationwide promoting tribal excellence in self-government. Nationally-renowned Indian scholar and activist Vine Deloria, Jr. recently called the Cherokee Nation’s history project “the most exciting idea in tribal education I have ever heard of.” The November dates in Rome mark only the second time that the course will have been offered in the pre-removal Cherokee Homeland. All participants will receive a certificate from the Cherokee Nation upon successful completion of the class. For registration information, call Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home at 706-291-9494 or send an email to chmuseum@bellsouth.net."

    1. Birmingham United Methodist Church, now North Fulton, once Cherokee
    2. Carole Johnson
    3. Dear List, I haven't posted in a while and thought that I'd give an update on the construction of our church. We have broken ground on the new Sanctuary and should be moved in by the end of 48 weeks! I would like to invite anyone who has EVER had a connection with this church to send me a note regarding what your connection/memory is. I have searched everywhere imaginable for records to the church and think that whatever might have been are now lost. As I've posted before, the only history we have is on file at the Pitt Library at Emory University and is the remembrances of a gentleman who was a member in the 1950s. This remembrance is also on the Old Milton County website. I have traced and elaborated on much of this and have used it as a starting point to write the history of the church. I've been able to prove most of it. One thing I haven't had a clue about is that the church beginning as a Congregational Church in 1838 by a Reverend Darter. The only Darter in any census in Georgia that I can trace to the area was a merchant and owner of slaves and he wasn't here until 1850. What I DO have is that the first person buried in the Church cemetery on Taylor Road just off of Birmingham Highway in north Fulton was Jacob Hook. The original drawer in the Gold Lottery of this land was a Leverett who apparently never took occupation of it. I can't locate how it happened, but the next owner was John Nix who sold it to Jacob Hook. Jacob was dead by 1855 at which time his family donated the land to the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church for a burying ground. The original deed must have been burned in the fire of the Milton Courthouse in the late 1860s because a duplicate was written in the early 1890s when David Hook, a descendant of Jacob, donated the land to the Trustees of the Church. I have had the cemetery surveyed recently. A church member recently inquired as to whether any current members could be buried there, so I located a local funeral home. Their representatives met me there and determined that there could be well over 100 interred in the cemetery although only 20 some-odd are marked. If you have ANY idea anyone you know was buried there, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. The last known burial was in 1929 and was the wife of Jonathan Pruet.t I strongly suspect his father (Zachary T. Pruett) is buried just forward of Jonathan, but can't prove it. I have poured over obituaries and was overjoyed at the publication of Mr. Carver's extraction of obits from the Cherokee Advance. I have only added one burial that wasn't marked, a daughter of Jacob Hook. By 1871 the congregation moved near the intersection of B'Ham Highway and B'Ham Roads (Then known as Orange-Roswell Rd and Hickory Flat Rd.) on land sold for only $25 by a PJ Wilson. The current building is probably the fourth on the site. A large pine has the remnants of a hitching post for horses embedded into it. . Some of the surnames of members of the Church are: Hook, Pruett (Pruitt), Day, Westbrook, John H. Johnston (former state Senator, I have a great deal about him) Chamblee, Maxwell, Neese, and Merriman. I'd like to add many names to this list. I was involved this weekend in a youth retreat on the 62 acres of land that is a part of our Sanctuary. I was so moved that this land was in the hands of original church members and is now returned. As development encroaches in north Fulton, this land will be a Sanctuary to many for hopefully generations more. My goal is to write an accurate history of the Church and community and incorporate it into a time capsule in the new Sanctuary. I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!! 3. Does anyone know who might have access to any old records of Pleasant Arbor Baptist Church? The Church is located near Waleksa in the Sallacoa Valley. I have checked Baptist records at Mercer University in Macon and haven't had any luck in locating anything. Since there isn't a church office, I don't know whom to contact. My grandparents, Henry and Mary Brewer, great-grandparents Vincent Elijah and Lula Westbrook, great-great grandparents Nathaniel Jackson and Mary Francis Fields and Thomas and Sarah Westbrook are all buried there. I suspect that Nathaniel Jackson Field's mother, Martha Jane Collins Fields and Mary Francis Fields' parents, James and Susan Craig are buried there as well. Susan Craig was a Hopgood and I believe her parents are buried there also. I have an obit on Thomas Westbrook that indicates he was a life-long Methodist. It appears that Thomas' brother William, was a life long resident of Pickens County. Since Thomas and his wife, Sarah are buried at Pleasant Arbor and it is a Baptist Church, I wonder what the pull was. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Carole Carole Johnson ammcj@earthlink.net Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

    3. Wyndell. I do not have any Land District-Land Lot-Section information for this property. All it stated in the various Jefferson County, GA tax digests is they owned 40 acres in Jefferson County, Ga. FYI, their sister, Amelia DANIEL (1795-1860) married a William P. TAYLOR and they moved from Burke County, GA to near Riddleville, Washington County, GA. I also have copies of the new book(s) on Jefferson County, GA Land Records by Dan CRUMPTON. I know some of the DANIELS of Cherokee County, GA, based upon what I saw in the Cherokee Archives, were part of that DANIEL bunch who were part Cherokee. That, is not the DANIEL bunch I am interested in. My bunch were mainly blue-eyed, blond (or of light complexion), short in statue and of thin frames. I have a picture of my GGF, Robert W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865). BTW, I am the US GENWEB county coordinator for both Morgan and Jefferson County, GA, as well as the List Administrator for Morgan County, GA and the DANIEL list, as well as other lists. If I can help anyone, feel free to drop me a note. John R.
