There is a Cherokee county cemetery survey book that lists all burials up to the 1990s. There is a Shiloh Methodist Church on Wade Green Road just west of GA 40 just east of Kennesaw, GA very near the Kennesaw Junior College. There is a website on the web. Use your search engine and it should take you to several sites that were surveyed in 2004. This church may have been in Cherokee County at one time as it is found under a Cherokee Co. listing. Hope this is some help. Flora, There are two Shiloh Methodist Churches in Cherokee County. I know there is a small cemetery (not maintained) across the street from the one on Univeter Road, just outside the southeast edge of Canton. The other church is on Shiloh Church Road in the extreme northeast part of county, near the Dawson County line. I do not know if there is a cemetery or not but would certainly expect there to be be one at almost all rural churches. There is also a Shiloh Methodist Church and cemetery in Cobb County on Wade Green Road at I-75, this is only about 1 or 1-1/2 miles from Cherokee County. And another Shiloh Methodist Church in Forsyth County, just north of Midway on Shiloh Road just off of Highway 9, again only a mile or so from Cherokee County line. Very confusing isn't it. I have a letter written in 1852 from Cherokee County, Georgia, to Old Pickens District, South Carolina. This letter was delivered to present day Oconee County, South Carolina. The surnames SMITH, BURNS, BROOKS, and SANDERS are mentioned in the letter.
but the son of Frances Wates gave the information for both his father and mother and on the father's everything was correct. I did think of that also. Thanks, Mary
Incorrect information is often given for death certificates. The information is often taken during a time of grief and when a lot of things are going on. I know because I gave incorrect information for a relative. I supplied her grandmothers name instead of her mothers name.
Adrienne, I have been finding that also. Scares the heck out of me! I married a Wyatt!! Thanks Mary
Bit more mud for the water on Waties, also Wyatt! Adrienne Wyatt Raleigh NC
Sandra, thank you so much for taking the time to try to help me. I am really puzzled on the Wates line. Thanks again, Mary

Mary, I checked the Cherokee County Marriage Index, Book E, 2 APR 1868 - 1 JAN 1885 (one marriage in 1889) There is no Frances or Fannie Wates/Waits. These are the 2 records that I found: WAITES, M. J.(bride) married FOWLER, W. J. on 17 NOV 1870 WAITS, Sarah A.(Bride) married PONDER, Alexander P. on 1 JAN 1880 You may check this out yourself at www.usgenveb.com under GA, Cherokee County Good Luck with your search! She married James W Webb b 1848 SC They first show up married there in Cherokee Co, Hickory Flat on the 1880 census with first child Laura age 3. I am searching for hopefully a marriage record that should be around 1877 or somewhere before the 1880 census. I believe there is a good chance they were married in Cherokee Co GA. I have her death record for 1929 Troup Co GA. It states she was born in TN and mother was Sarah and father Charlie. I cannot find her in a family with parents of this names. The closest match I can find is the Madison Wait Sarah Walker family in 1860 Oak Grove, Fulton Co GA. I have checked every census I can think of and every possible spelling of the last name. I don't want to futher confuse you, but discussion about the name reminded me that there was a Cherokee named Stand Watie who served the Confederacy during the Civil War, primarily in the west. He was born in Floyd County, Georgia not far from Cherokee County. You might want to check this site out: http://www.nativeamericans.com/StandWatie.htm There may be no relationship at all, but I've seen the name written so many different ways that this one is worth considering. -------------- Original message -------------- > Thank you for the help on the name. Thank you so much for this web-site. It is wonderful history reading for anyone. I have wondered if maybe my great grandmother could have came from this Wattie Cherokee line. I may never really know. What is so odd is on her death record from Troup Co Ga 1929. This information was given by her son Odie Cleveland Webb (July 10, 1889 Cherokee Co birth record died Mar 18 1970) he said her mother was Sarah and father Charlie I just cannot find a Charles or Charlie Wates old enough to be her father. Frances was born about 1861. I just do not believe that any woman with 10 children of her own could forget who her parents were. She must have passed this down to her children. Thanks again, Mary
Thank you for the help on the name. It has to be the hardest line I have ever searched. Also, a strong feeling and more reasons with this Wates family they may be of Native American blood-lines. Since Frances (Fanny) Wates b 1856 shows up first on the Cherokee county census married in 1880 is one thing I think might lead to this. Beginning to think I will not find her family. Mary
